    Heywood (Thomas) The Hierarchie of the blessed Angells, first edition, with initial licence leaf, engraved allegorical title, 9 engraved plates included in pagination, with final blank, ink ownership inscriptions to dedication leaf, licence leaf a little frayed at edges with small defect fore-edge blank margin, Aaa3-4 loose and slightly frayed at edges, a couple of other leaves with small closed tears, some minor soiling, some damp-staining to inner and top margins, but becoming more extensive towards end, contemporary calf, with leather repairs to spine and lower cover, a bit rubbed and worn, [STC 13327], folio, by Adam Islip, 1635. *** Heywood's long poem, containing a passage discussing early dramatists including Shakespeare.

    Thomas Heywood,  British 1846-1919-  A gentleman in an artist's studio, admiring a painting on an easel;  pencil and watercolour heightened with white on paper, signed, inscribed, and dated 'Thos Heywood / Art Student / Age 21 years / June 1868' verso, bears 'ESK' blindstamp (lower right), 35.5 x 21.6 cm.  Provenance:  with Hazlitt, Gooden & Fox Ltd., London.  Private Collection, UK.  Note:  The inscription on the reverse and the blindstamp reading 'ESK', which stands for 'Examined South Kensington', suggests that the present work is an examination piece completed whilst Heywood, best known for his later work as an animal painter, was a student.

    Heywood (Thomas) Gynaikeion: or, Nine Bookes of Various History Concerninge Women, first edition, engraved title trimmed and laid down, lacking initial and final blank leaves and text leaf Nn4, this latter transcribed in manuscript in a neat hand onto two inserted leaves, outer edge of Q1 defective affecting ruled border but not text, a few other tears and minor burn-holes slightly affecting text, some soiling and water-staining, a few ink annotations and scribbles, later half calf over marbled boards, worn, [STC 13326], folio, Printed by Adam Islip, 1624. ⁂ A rather tired copy of an important work by this contemporary of Shakespeare. Includes a section on witches (whence the leaf is missing) Provenance: Joshua Churchman (longitudinal ink inscription on A3 "Bought at London December 1692 Cost 6 shillings"); William Stonehouse (ink inscription on final leaf).

H. for W. H., 1657. ⁂ Scarce work on women by the playwright and author Heywood, includes a section on witches.

Welby... ... who lived at his house in Grub-street forty foure yeares, and in that space, was never seene by any... who in all that time neither dranke wine, nor eate flesh, as it is testified... with some new epitaphs, engraved frontispiece (lower corner restored and shaved at foot, affecting text, chipped at head), lacking final blank f., title shaved at foot affecting imprint and with some repairs to head, several ff. chipped and repaired at extremities, F1, F2 and F3 holed with loss to text, light dampstaining, bookplate to pastedown, 20th century morocco-backed boards, [STC 25226.5], small 4to, by N. Okes, and are to be sold by Richard Clotterbuck at his shop in little Brittaine, [at the signe of the golden ball], [1637]. ⁂ The recluse Welby was one of Grub Street's early residents. He was the owner of the estate of Goxhill in Lincolnshire. In 1592 his half-brother attempted to shoot him with a pistol. Shocked, he took a house on Grub Street and remained there, in near-total seclusion, for the rest of his life. He died in 1636 and was buried at St. Giles in Cripplegate. Provenance: William Arthur, Sixth Duke of Portland (armorial bookplate).
