    • ALFRED HIERL (1910-1950). GRAND PRIX / NÜRBURGRING. 1939. 46¾x33 inches, 118¾x83¾ cm.
      May. 19, 2022

      ALFRED HIERL (1910-1950). GRAND PRIX / NÜRBURGRING. 1939. 46¾x33 inches, 118¾x83¾ cm.

      Est: $7,000 - $10,000

ALFRED HIERL (1910-1950) GRAND PRIX / NÜRBURGRING. 1939. 46 3/4x33 inches, 118 3/4x83 3/4 cm. Condition A-: minor abrasions and restoration at edges and along vertical and horizontal folds; minor repaired tears at edges; slight darkening at bottom right corner; unobtrusive repaired pin holes in corners. Not much biographical information is known about Hierl, a German artist from Munich. He designed several posters for car and motorcycle races and in 1936, he won a silver medal in the art competitions of the Berlin Olympic Games for his poster Internationales Avusrennen ("International Avus Race"). He was an official war artist during World War II. The artist's design choice to extend the flag pole past the image, through to the bottom of the poster, sets the viewer right next to the track, with just a slightly obscured view of the race. The Nürburgring, constructed in 1927, is one of the most famous racetracks in the world.

      Int. Eifelrennen. ca. 1936.

      Est: $2,000 - $2,500

ARTIST: ALFRED HIERL SIZE: 23 x 33 3/4 in./58.5 x 86 cm DESCRIPTION: The Eifelrennen, an annual motor race, was first organized in 1922, before the Nürburgring was even built. This oversight was madness. At that time, the race—incredibly enough—allowed all types of vehicles on the track at the same time: cars, motorbikes, and even bikes with supporting engines. The unpaved track was muddy in the rain, fatal accidents occurred, and spectator stands collapsed. As a result, the Nürburgring was constructed in 1927, and has since become hallowed ground for racing enthusiasts. Since then, racing has been separated by vehicle type, but Hierl's brilliant composition blurs the distinction as a sedan, a racer, and a motorbike lean into one of the Nürburgring's 174 curves. Artist: ALFRED HIERL Size: 23 5/8 x 33 in./60 x 83.8 cm Outside of producing numerous automobile posters throughout the 1930s, little is known of Hierl. Here, he announces the 1937 German Grand Prix at Nürburgring with a neck-and-neck battle between an Alfa-Romeo 12C-36 and the local favorite Mercedes-Benz W 125. Interestingly, the Mercedes-driving winner that year, Rudolf Caracciola, ultimately fled Germany to become a Swiss citizen.
