      • Cardwell S. Higgins (1902-1983) WWII Preliminary Waterc
        Dec. 12, 2014

Cardwell S. Higgins (1902-1983) WWII Preliminary Waterc

        Est: $2,000 - $3,000

Cardwell S. Higgins (1902-1983) WWII Preliminary Watercolor Paintings Murals in a Richmond, Virginia Military Service Club, 1943. Cardwell Higgins' first notable works were for Paramount Motion Pictures in the mid-1920s, painting portraits of famous movie stars, designing billboards, and magazine covers for the studio. He was also a prolific painter of pin-up girls, many of his works gracing the covers of popular magazines of the day. Just prior to the war he designed the flying falcon logo for Eastern Airlines. Higgins joined the Corps of Engineers, attached to the Army Air Force as an instructor in aviation camouflage. It was during his time in service that he painted two large 30 x 60 foot murals depicting an aerial battle for the Service Club at Richmond Army Air Base in Virginia. We are pleased to offer Higgins' original preliminary watercolor paintings for those murals, along with some interesting contemporary documentation of the works. The lot includes: (1) Watercolor on paper, 30" x 20", signed at the right edge "S/Sgt. Cardwell Higgins 4/15/43". Higgins' patriotic work features B-17 bombers and other aircraft types, a sea battle, and various other battle vignettes. At the lower edge of the illustration is an Army Air Force winged star and ribbon bearing the names of several branches of service - Quartermaster, Signal Corps, Medical Corps, Army Air Force, Ground Crew, Ordnance and Engineers, all represented in his painting. This work is accompanied by two copies of the base newspaper The Reflector, dated May 7, 1943 with a story about Higgins generally, and the murals in particular. A photograph in the article shows Higgins working on the actual preliminary painting offered in this lot and a contemporary negative of the finished mural is included. (2) A second watercolor of identical proportion, signed at the right edge "S/Sgt. Cardwell Higgins 4/10/43"depicts a ferocious aerial battle in which an enemy aircraft is shot down in flames. Accompanying this preliminary painting are four original Army Air Base Richmond photographs featuring Higgins as he executes the mural depicted by the painting. Interestingly, Higgins has modified the mural a bit from his original drawing by making the flaming aircraft a German Do 17 twin-engine bomber. Both watercolors are in excellent condition.

CARDWELL HIGGINS (American, 1902-1983) Eastern Airlines Ad Illustration Pen and ink on paper 11.5 x 8.5 in. Not signed This illustration is framed along side an 12.5 x 9 in. photograph inscribed, "To my dear friend Cardwell S. Higgins -- Capt. Eddie Rickenbacker." The highly decorated World War I flying ace and iconic American war hero Captain Eddie Rickenbacker (1890-1973) helped create and operate Eastern Airlines later in his career. In 1935, when General Motors gained ownership of Eastern Air Transport, they asked Rickenbacker to manage the company. With outside help he then merged Eastern Air Transport with Florida Airways to form Eastern Airlines. Under Rickenbacker, Eastern Airlines, based in Miami, became a major international transportation company. In 1938 when Rickenbacker learned that GM was selling Eastern he bought the company and remained as CEO until 1959. Higgins and Rickenbacker were friends prior to the forming of Eastern Airlines, and this photograph is dated 1930. This piece is known to have been one of Charles Martignette's most treasured items. From the Estate of Charles Martignette.
