Date: c. 1870 Description: The parable of the resurrection of Lazarus was a frequent subject of painting in early Christian art as a reference to the resurrection of Christ. a frequent subject of painting in early Christian art. History painters such as Ernst Hildebrand contributed to its rediscovery in the 19th century. century. According to the Gospel of John, the body of Lazarus had already been lying in the cave tomb for four days when his sisters Martha and Mary lamented his death to Jesus. He had the stone removed from the entrance to the tomb and raised Lazarus with the words Lazarus to life with the words "Lazarus, come out". This moment is shown in Hildebrand's work. Christ stands in the centre of the centre of the composition with his arms outstretched towards Lazarus. His blue and red robe forms a strong colourful accent in contrast to the white grave cloths of Lazarus. It is a compositional measure that symbolises where the returned life comes from. It is an incomprehensible scene, the drama of which is reflected in the faces of the audience: Fear, joy and fear, joy and disbelief are expressed here and are further emphasised by the violent gestures. Overall, however the artist prefers to let the clear, bright colours do the talking. In conjunction with the scene depicted, they become a carrier of hope.
