Artist bio: A landscape painter, etcher and illustrator, Rowland Hilder was born in 1905 at Great Neck, Long Island USA. His parents, of Kentish stock, took him back to England in 1915 when he was ten years old. He trained at Goldsmiths' College School of Art, London and then had an active career for more than fifty years. His work was first shown at the Royal Academy in 1923.Rowland Hilder also was a Professor of Drawing for more than ten years at Goldsmith's College School of Art.In 1986 Rowland Hilder was awarded the Order of the British Empire.Hilder died in 1993. There are two books focused on his work, "Rowland Hilders England" and "Rowland Hilder Country". His definitive book on his craft, "Starting in Watercolour" was reissued in an enlarged and revised edition in September 1988.Of Rowland Hilder's landscape painting, Sir Hugh Casson, Former President of the Royal Academy, wrote: "His style and technique are so recognisable that there are parts of England which - in tribute to his skill - seem to have grown physically like his paintings"Submitted February 1005 by Garry Herrington

From the foreground at the moment of the swing, your eye sweeps up to the fractals of the barely bare treetops, then swoops all the way down the green to another party negotiating a sand trap by the Tudor mansion and the 1940s-'50s cabriolets nestled alongside, with the steep hills cascading down to meadows, fells, and perhaps even the sea in its white tumbling. Even the bark of the trees is etched to be tactile and alive. "Come to Britain for Golf" Vintage Travel Poster, Circa 1952

This is a framed 1952 vintage golf travel poster, entitled Come to Britain for Golf by Rowland Hilder. The lithographic poster was published by the Travel Association of Great Britain and Northern Ireland to promote Britain as a holiday destination. The poster was printed in Great Britain by W. S. Cowell Ltd. London & Ipswich and the emblem of the â€œTravel Association of the U.K, of Gt. Britain & N. Irelandâ€ is printed in the bottom left hand corner. In the scene, four men play a relaxing game of golf in the golden light of Autumn. As the eye is drawn to the background, Hilderâ€™s poster showcases Britainâ€™s rolling hills and luxurious country clubs. The United Kingdom has a long history of Golf. The game was first invented in Scotland during the 15th century. Later in 1744, the first gentlemanâ€™s golf club was formed and rules began to formalize. During the 19th century, wherever the rule of Great Britain went, golf soon followed. The sport grew and certain destinations became known for their own style of courses. As seen in the poster, Britainâ€™s unique bunkers and rough links courses varied greatly from others, like the carefully manicured courses of the United States. The artist, Rowland Frederick Hilder (1905-1993), was an English book illustrator, artist, and former Marine. He is most known for his black and white illustrations of Treasure Island for which he won The Times Illustratorâ€™s Award in 1929. Hilder then began a long career with the travel guide company Then and Now designing posters. He put his skill in painting landscapes to good use while working for the travel company and produced many fine depictions. However, the poster presented here was created specifically for the Travel Association of Great Britain.
