West Dean, Sussex, circa 1930's, oil on paper, signed with initial H to lower left corner, 30 x 46.5 cm (11 3/4 x 18 1/4 ins) mount aperture, modern gilt frame, glazed QTY: (1) NOTE: Provenance: Oliver Hill, by whom gifted to Mrs. Dorothea Leeper when she stayed at Daneway House, Gloucestershire. West Dean, near Chichester, Sussex was the home of the poet and important patron of the arts Edward James (1907-1984). The Arts and Crafts (later modernist) architect Oliver Falvey Hill was a leading British architect and designer of the 1920s and 30s. From 1948 he lived at Daneway House, the former home and workshop of the designer Ernest Gimson.

          Oliver Hill (British 1886-1968) (attributed to) Art Deco 'Zebra' Rug, circa 1930 wool on cotton foundation (203cm x 119.5cm (80in x 47in)) Footnote: Oliver Hill was a famed architect and design, known for his architectural modernism of the 1930s, important commissions such as Claridge’s Hotel, London and of the British Pavilion at the Paris Exposition of 1937. He has also been associated with the design of these rare group of zebra patterned rugs, which were commissioned from the Nichols Carpet Manufactory in Tientsin, North China, a manufacturer of Art Deco western influenced carpets to both Europe and America during the 1920s to 1940s.
