      Est: $2,000 - $3,000

JAMES HILLEARY AMERICAN, WASHINGTON, D.C., 1924-2014 AFTERIMAGE SERIES Acrylic on canvas Catalogue note: James Hilleary was an architect and member of the Washington Color School. His paintings are held in the permanent collections of the Smithsonian American Art Museum, the Phillips Collection and the Corcoran Museum of Art. His "Afterimages" series was one of his earliest to gain critical acclaim. A 1978 review in the Montgomery Journal wrote, "In a series of canvases called "Afterimages," Hilleary captured the spotted, blurred image the eye retains after staring at some bright shape and then closing. Thin chevrons lie under an acrylic wash." In a 2013 review of one of Hilleary's later-in-life exhibitions, prominent art critic Donald Kuspit wrote: "From the beginning of his career, as Coptic, 1966, Polaris, 1971, the Afterimage Series, 1974, and Portal Series, 1979 indicate, Hilleary was interested in patterns as well as colors—patterns not simply as decorative displays of color, but as an intricate arrangement of what the Futurists called lines of force. Thus he oscillates between the geometrical and atmospheric extremes of pure painting, integrating them in the act of acknowledging their difference."

    • JAMES HILLEARY,  AMERICAN 1924-2014 -  UNTITLED (NO.119),1970;  ACRYLIC ON CANVAS, SIGNED NUMBERED
      Jun. 06, 2023

JAMES HILLEARY,  AMERICAN 1924-2014 -  UNTITLED (NO.119),1970;  ACRYLIC ON CANVAS, SIGNED NUMBERED

      Est: £1,500 - £2,500

James Hilleary,  American 1924-2014 -  Untitled (No.119),1970;  acrylic on canvas, signed numbered and dated to the overflap 'James Hilleary 119 Nov '70', also signed to the stretcher 'James Hilleary', 60.8 x 60.8 cm  Provenance: private collection, Washington D.C., gifted by the Artist and thence by descent  Note: the present owner's mother worked for the Artist's mother.  Hilleary was a trained architect, turning to art after serving in World War II, where he became associated with the Washington Colour School. This work is exemplary of their process of staining the raw, unprimed canvas. Here, daubs of green and blue melt in to each other in the background, contrasted with the sharp diagonal metallic lines which one would find in the work of Kenneth Noland.  His work in the collections of the Smithsonian American Art Museum, the Phillips Collection, the Corcoran Gallery of Art, Washington, and the Museo de Arte Contemporaneo de Buenos Aires.

JAMES HILLEARY (1924 - 2014, AMERICAN) Untitled. Metal foil tape and acrylic sheets in a metal frame, 1969. 1067x1067 mm; 42x42 inches. Provenance: Commissioned by Leslie and Cay Bell, Bethesda, MD; thence by descent to the current owner. Swann is grateful to Cecily Hilleary, daughter of the artist and executor of his estate, for confirming the authenticity of this work. James Hilleary spent most of his life in the Washington DC area, and is often included in listings of the DC Color Field artists. His exploration in color and striped formats was arrived at independently, yet he was exhibited at important DC galleries that emphasized DC Color Field, such as Henri Gallery, and the artist owned and operated Studio Gallery founded in 1956 by artist Jeannie Lea Knight. Hilleary lived a life of dual careers as both a painter and an architect. This work was conceived, site specific, for an opening between rooms in the second home of the Bell family, and is meant to be viewed from both sides.
