      Hilsdorf, Jacob: Adolph von Menzel

      Est: €1,200 - €1,400

Portrait of the painter Adolph von Menzel (1815 - 1905). 1904. Vintage gelatin silver print double mounted on heavy black paper. 18,8 x 13,9 cm (29,3 x 21,2 cm). This image is from a series of eleven portrait photographs Jacob Hilsdorf took of Adolph von Menzel in the artist's studio in 1904, nine months before the painter's death. Menzel's melancholic state towards the end of his life is evident in these portraits and Menzel himself was aware of being able to create certain moods and effects by posing and using props. Hilsdorf's expert technique in lighting and printing as a photographer and Menzel's artistic sensitivity as a sitter make this a truly great portrait. - Some oxidation mirroring in upper edge, handling marks with light fingerprints, retouching for publication in lower edge, otherwise a rich tonal print in very good condition. Lit.: Franz Toth. Jacob Hilsdorf 1872 - 1916. Photograph im Jugendstil. Bingen 1989, ill. cat. no. 51.
