The scholar’s rocks with the daisies are a unique choice, if compared to similar subjects found in Nanga school paintings. The scroll painting is dated to the summer of 1916, when Chikugai was 76 years old. Condition: The scroll painting is in very good condition with minor wear. The mounting with small staining and minor creases. The reverse has a little darkened with time. The dimensions are 195 x 52 cm (length x width). HIMEJIMA Chikugai (1840-1928) Chikugai was trained in painting at a young age by MURATA Toho and Ishimaru Shungyu. He lived during a period when Japan was undergoing great social and cultural changes. The Meiji period saw rapid reform and adaptations of Western ideas, thoughts, and culture while at the same time many of Japan's traditions and ideas were being discarded. Chikugai was one of the artists who felt that his tradition of painting, the Nanga School, needed to be preserved and became an important figure in raising artists who in turn helped to establish the new Shin-Nanga movement, adding Western elements in Japanese painting yet retaining its traditional feel. Chikugai was skilled in painting landscapes and still lifes, frequently employing bold lines and brushstrokes in his paintings.
