In New York, Hines was included in the group exhibition Eight Young Americans at the John Heller Gallery in December of 1954, and joined the Parma Gallery group of artists. The year earlier, he had begun study at New York University's School of Eductation. Felrath Hines later achieved critical recognition with his painterly abstraction of nature with two solo exhibitions at the Parma Gallery in 1957 and 1959. He went on to become a founding member of the collective artists group Spiral in 1963, while having a long career as a museum painting conservator.

Felrath Hines achieved critical recognition for his painterly abstraction with two solo exhibitions at Parma Gallery in 1957 and 1959, and his inclusion in group exhibitions at the John Heller Gallery and Parma Gallery in New York in the 1950s. He was a founding member of the Spiral Group in 1963. Hines later became Chief Conservator at the National Portrait Gallery from 1972-1980 and the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden in Washington, DC from 1980 until his retirement in 1984. Est: $6,000 - $9,000

FELRATH HINES (1913 - 1993) Hanging Garden. Oil on canvas, 1954. 508x610 mm; 20x24 inches. Signed and dated in oil, lower right recto. Signed, titled and inscribed "24x20" in pencil, verso. Provenance: Parma Gallery, New York, with the ink stamp on the strecther bar; St. Julian Fishburne, Hines's friend and fellow painter and conservator; private collection. Through the 1950s, he continued in this Abstract Expressionist style while working as a conservator at the Museum of Modern Art, New York. By the 1960s, he moved to a flatter, more geometric form of abstraction, and became a founding member of the Spiral Group in 1963. Hines was later the chief conservator at both the National Portrait Gallery and the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden in Washington, DC. Only after his retirement in 1984 was Hines finally able to paint full-time.

      Est: $1,000 - $1,500

From this period through the 1950s, Hines worked in an Abstract Expressionist style, while working full time as a conservator. He was the chief conservator at both the National Portrait Gallery and the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden in Washington, DC, and worked as a conservator at the Museum of Modern Art, New York.
