HIROSHI SUGIMOTO (Tokyo 1948–lives and works in New York) Time Exposed. 1991. 43 offset lithographs. From the edition of 500. Signed in the imprint: Hiroshi Sugimoto. Each with the blindstamped title and number on the original backing board below the image. Image 24 × 31 cm firmly laid down on backing board 35.2 × 46.2 cm. Published by Kyoto Shoi. Printed by Mitsumura Printing, Tokyo. In the original aluminium box as well as with the cardboard cover. Uncomplete. "Photography is like a found object. A photographer never makes an actual subject; they just steal the image from the world. Photography is a system of saving memories. It’s a time machine, in a way, to preserve the memory, to preserve time." Hiroshi Sugimoto Hiroshi Sugimoto's “Time Exposed” from 1991 is an outstanding work of art, notable for the sophistication of its aesthetics and its conceptual depth. The Japanese master photographer uses an old plate camera and creates unique images by means of exceptionally long exposure times. This portfolio reflects his “Seascapes” series, produced from the late 1970s, and demonstrates his ability to capture water and sky in almost abstract compositions in which time seems to stand still. “Although the land is constantly changing shape, the sea is unchanging, I thought. So, my journeys began back through time to the ancient seas of the world,” observes the erudite Sugimoto. His notes reveal a deep understanding of the essence of his art, informed by its dialectical character. The sea, constantly changing and yet unchanged, serves as a fitting metaphor for the complexity of time: a web of relativity and inscrutability that can only be deciphered through abstract formulas and personal experience. Photography, deeply rooted in the entanglements of time, proves to be the ideal medium for conveying Sugimoto's artistic visions. Through his lens, ever-changing natural scenes are transformed into timeless tableaux. Apart from a lithograph with an architectural motif, which emphasises the thematic diversity of this artist's work, the portfolio is dominated by spectacular seascapes. The offset printing technique enables Sugimoto to reproduce precisely the fine nuances of his black and white photographs. --------------- HIROSHI SUGIMOTO (Tokio 1948–lebt und arbeitet in New York) Time Exposed. 1991. 43 Offsetlithografien. "Photography is like a found object. A photographer never makes an actual subject; they just steal the image from the world. Photography is a system of saving memories. It’s a time machine, in a way, to preserve the memory, to preserve time." ---------------

"'Maybe I am already half dead.' - Hiroshi Sugimoto. I am almost inclined to take Hiroshi Sugimoto at his word. Since 1976 he has been elaborating on three basic themes - dioramas, movie theatres, and seascapes - and almost every picture shares the same quiet morbidity, as if all his prints had been developed in embalming fluid."
