      SUMIYOSHI HIROTSURA (1793 – 1863) Untitled Late Edo period, early 19th Century A Japanese hanging scroll painting, kakejiku, ink and colour on silk, depicting a masked performer in a Chinese-style brocade costume beneath a pine tree, inscribed Sumiyoshi Naiki Hirosada ga and sealed, 96cm high, 35cm long - NOTE: A well-respected artist within his lifetime, Hirotsura run a popular workshop. In 1856 he secured a commission from shogun Tokugawa Iesada for screens to be sent as a gift to King Willem III of the Netherlands. Hirotsura's works are in the collections of major museums including the British Museum in London.

      A pair of hanging scrolls by Sumiyoshi Hirotsura depicting a sea coast with a) blossoming cherry trees, salt gatherers and salt burning huts, and b) red maple trees, fishing boats and huts. Ink and colours on silk. Signed Sumiyoshi Naiki hitsu and sealed. Wooden box, the reverse with a long inscription dated cyclically Shôwa 8 (1933).
