      • Johann Leonhard Hirschmann, Portrait of the later King George II of Great Britain and Ireland as Electoral Prince of Hanover
        Nov. 16, 2024

Johann Leonhard Hirschmann, Portrait of the later King George II of Great Britain and Ireland as Electoral Prince of Hanover

        Est: €15,000 - €20,000

Until 1992, when it was purchased at auction by its current owner, the present portrait was considered to be a likeness of an unknown prince by Hyazinthe Rigaud. However, the young man depicted is in fact the then Electoral Prince George Augustus of Hanover and later King George II of Great Britain and Ireland (1683-1760). A very similar version of this portrait by Johann Leonhard Hirschmann can be found in the Niedersächsisches Landesmuseum in Hanover (inv. no. KM 90). Both paintings show the young prince in a voluminous allonge wig looking at the viewer over his left shoulder. This lends the composition a highly dynamic quality despite the fact that the prince has been cropped to a half-figure. While George August wears ceremonial armour in both portraits, the ermine-lined gold cloak can only be seen in the Hanoverian portrait. The present painting, which depicts the prince alone in his ceremonial armour, is thus much closer to a surviving mezzotint sheet by John Smith (fig. 1) and probably served as a model for the latter. The sheet by John Smith names ‘I. Hirseman pinx.’ at the bottom left as the author of the original painting. This refers to the Nuremberg painter Johann Leonhard Hirschmann, who worked for a time in London and is said to have been a pupil of Sir Godfrey Kneller (1646-1723). The attribution of the present painting to Hirschmann was confirmed in 1992 by the Kneller expert Professor J. Douglas Stewart (1934-2008) in a letter to the owner and confirmed verbally during an inspection of the original in 1994. The future King George II was born in Herrenhausen Palace in 1683, as the son of Duke George Louis of Brunswick-Lüneburg, making him the last British monarch to be born outside Great Britain. After the death of his father, who had been appointed to the British throne in 1714, he succeeded as King of Great Britain and Ireland in 1727. His reign was characterised by the expansion of the British colonial empire and the increasing influence of Great Britain in world politics. By contrast, the king largely left domestic policy to his ministers, in particular Sir Robert Walpole, who is regarded as Britain's first prime minister. King George II died in 1760, leaving behind a country that was on the eve of major colonial conflicts, particularly in North America, but was also on its way to becoming one of the world's leading powers.
