Flusslandschaft im Gebirge. -- Feder in Schwarz, auf alter Sammlermontage. 17,5 x 27,4 cm. -- -- Bei diesem Blatt handelt es sich um eine zeitgenössische Wiederholung nach einer Radierung Augustin Hirschvogels aus dem Jahre 1542 (vgl. Hollstein 36), welche wiederum die Landschaftsauffassung der sogenannten Donauschule rezipierte. Obwohl es sich um eine Wiederholung handelt, fehlt die suchende Zaghaftigkeit, die das Bestreben einer ungeübten Hand nach Exaktheit kennzeichnet. AUGUSTIN HIRSCHVOGEL River Landscape with Two Buildings Connected by a Bridge. Etching, 1545. 155x185 mm; 6 1/4x7 1/4 inches, narrow margins. A brilliant, richly-inked, early impression of this extremely scarce landscape etching. We have found only 2 other impressions at auction in the past 30 years. Nearly all of Hirschvogel's (1503-1553) approximately 300 etchings date from the last decade of his life, by which time in addition to mastering the fine arts he had become an accomplished cartographer, stained glass maker and fortification designer for the city of Vienna, then under siege from Islamic invaders from the east. Hirschvogel was among the earliest group of artists to practice pure landscape etching, a pursuit that had begun with Albrecht Altdorfer in the mid 1510s. He was also among the first to use copper rather than iron etching plates. According to Landau and Parshall, Hirschvogel, "Is best known for the pastoral, dreamy views of the Salzkammergut [present day northern Austria, east of Salzburg] that occupied him for much of the 1540s, such conspicuous displays of calligraphic freedom of etched line that they take on a mannered, if charming, redundancy," (Landau and Parshall, The Renaissance Print, 1470-1550, New Haven, 1994, pages 345-346). Prachtvoller, prägnanter und in den dunklen Stellen gratiger Abzug des ersten, frühen Zustands vor Änderung des Datums von 1545 zu 1569. Vorwiegend verso etwas fleckig, vertikale, hinterlegte Mittelfalz, leichte horizontale, hinterlegte Mittelfalz, diese links mit einem hinterlegten Sprung bis zur Mitte reichend, die Ränder teils etwas bestoßen, dort teilweise mit kleinen Ausbesserungen und Hinterlegungen, winziger geschlossener Riss über dem linken Affen, weitere, teils ausgebesserte Erhaltungsmängel, vereinzelt mit kleinen Federretuschen, verso mit einzelnen, zarten Federannotationen und -skizzen, sonst jedoch im Gesamteindruck ein wunderbares Exemplar. AUGUSTIN HIRSCHVOGEL River Landscape with a Large Tree at Left. Etching, 1546. 143x212 mm; 5 5/8x8 3/8 inches. Second state (of 2). With thread margins or trimmed on the plate mark, expertly restored circular loss upper center in the blank background. A superb impression of this extremely scarce, early landscape etching. We have found only 2 other impressions at auction in the past 25 years. Nealry all of Hirschvogel's (1503-1553) approximately 300 etchings date from the last decade of his life, by which time in addition to mastering the fine arts he had become an accomplished cartographer, stained glass maker and fortification designer for the city of Vienna, then under siege from Islamic invaders from the east. With the partly visible border on the upper and lower sides, the left and right margin cut just inside the line. Fully backed. Overall good condition. HIRSCHVOGEL, AUGUSTIN (Nürnberg 1503 - 1553 Wien). Christus das Kreuz tragend, 1545. Radierung, 18,7 x 15,3 cm. Bartsch 3; Hollstein 8. Gerahmt. - Schöner, klarer und gleichmässiger Druck. Mit der teilweise sichtbaren Einfassungslinie am oberen und unteren Rand, der linke und rechte Rand knapp innerhalb dieser geschnitten. Ganzflächig aufgezogen. Insgesamt guter Erhaltungszustand.
