Dang Xuan Hoa is one of the most high profile Vietnamese artists in the Post-Doi Moi (Renovation; or Renewal), doing mostly still-lifes and self-portraits in semi-abstract style. As in this work of a sectioned domestic interior, there is the pet cat, a lantern, bowls of fruit, a stylish table, kerosene lamp, and fish in the kitchen, painted against a neon pink background. He is a member of the promising Gang of 5, the others being Ha Tri Hieu, Tran Luong, Viet Dung and Pham Quang Vinh. In his book on Hoa, the critic Phan Can Thong wrote: “Hoa's paintings are a process of spiritual development in which love and respect of life help him better understand himself.” Hoa's emergence started after he graduated from the Hanoi College of Fine Art in 1983. His first solo was held overseas, in Massachusetts in the United States, at the Berkshire Community College, in 1994, under the Asian Cultural Centre's Indo-China art programme. His first home solo was at the Mai Gallery in Hanoi in 1997, followed by another in Singapore (2007) and Ho Chi Minh City (2011). He was selected for the Havana Biennale, Cuba, in 1989, the Art Miami from 2005-2007, and took part in such exhibitions as Poetic Reflections and Ascending Dragons, both in New York, in 1999 and 2000 respectively. He also took part in the 2009 exhibition in San Francisco, USA, titled Tradition And Change: Vietnamese Art Today.

Dang Xuan Hoa's works often feature objects of still life - like kerosene lamps, fruits, teapots and fish drawn from interior surroundings. His interest is mainly on the elements of domestic life portrayed from his visual imagination, reinterpreted in playful and stylized forms. A highly expressive piece, the unique placement of objects in this work and harmony of colour radiates a sense of totality as painting for him is a process of spiritual development. Dang Xuan Hoa graduated from Hanoi University of Fine Arts in 1983 and participated in his first group exhibition Young Painters in 1985. In 1987, he was selected as one of the young artists to exhibit at the Vietnam National Museum of Fine Arts, Hanoi. He was a member of the Gang of Five, an important movement in the history of contemporary art in Vietnam of the 1990s. The group shared the affinity to combine traditional Vietnamese elements with modernity with a common goal to create works of art in the manner of Abstract Expressionism. They were also dubbed by art critics as the most promising painters of their generation. Other group members included Ha Tri Hieu, Tran Luan, Hong Viet Dung and Pham Quang Vinh. Dang Xuan Hoa was the first Vietnamese artist invited to visit the USA under the Indochina Art's Project's visiting-artist programme sponsored by the Asian Cultural Council after the lifting of the American embargo in 1994. He has participated in over 30 national and international exhibitions in Hanoi, Cuba, Hong Kong, Singapore, London, and the United States. His paintings are held in the collection of Vietnam National Museum of Fine Arts, Hanoi and Singapore Art Museum.

Dang Xuan Hoa's works often feature objects of still life â€” like vases, bowls, fruits, flowers and animals which are symbols of abundance â€” surrounding a figure. His interest is mainly on the elements of domestic life portrayed from his visual imagination. The haphazard placement of objects in his works and harmony of colour radiate a sense of totality as painting for him is a process of spiritual development. The pictorial structure of his Vat cua Nguoi or Human Objects series developed since the 1990s has aroused the characteristics of his artistic approach. Dang Xuan Hoa graduated from Hanoi University of Fine Arts in 1983 and participated in his first group exhibition Young Painters in 1985. In 1987, he was selected as one of the young artists to exhibit at the Vietnam National Museum of Fine Arts, Hanoi. He was a member of the Gang of Five, an important movement in the history of contemporary art in Vietnam of the 1990s. The group shared the affinity to combine traditional Vietnamese elements with modernity with a common goal to create works of art in the manner of Abstract Expressionism. They were also dubbed by art critics as the most promising painters of their generation. Other group members are Ha Tri Hieu, Tran Luan, Hong Viet Dung and Pham Quang Vinh. Dang Xuan Hoa was the first Vietnamese artist invited to visit the USA under the Indochina Art's Project's visiting-artist programme sponsored by the Asian Cultural Council after the lifting of the American embargo in 1994. He has participated in over 30 national and international exhibitions in Hanoi, Cuba, Hong Kong, Singapore, London, and the United States. His paintings are held in the collection of Vietnam National Museum of Fine Arts, Hanoi and Singapore Art Museum.
