Attributed to William Hoare RA (English, 1706-1792) THE RIGHT HONORABLE HENRY BOYLE, 1ST EARL OF SHANNON (1682-1762), SPEAKER OF THE IRISH HOUSE OF COMMONS, 1733 oil on canvas inscribed with title on reverse h:30  w:25 in. Provenance: Collection of Bank of Ireland Henry Boyle, 1st Earl of Shannon, (1682 – 1764), was an Anglo-Irish politician and peer who served as the Speaker of the Irish House of Commons from 1733 to 1756. A prominent parliamentarian who sat for almost fifty years in the Parliament of Ireland, Boyle frequently defended Irish interests against British Crown officials, eventually leading to a legal crisis which saw him step down as speaker in return for a peerage. William Hoare of Bath was a British portraitist, painter and printmaker. From c.1740 to 1759, he was the leading oil portraitist at Bath, Somerset, until Thomas Gainsborough arrived in the town. Noted for his pastels, he was a foundation member of the Royal Academy.

        William Hoare, Allegory of Summer

        Est: €10,000 - €14,000

Framed under glass After a nine-year stay in Rome, William Hoare returned to England in 1737/38 and settled as a painter in the fashionable town of Bath. There, together with William Gainsborough, he became one of the most sought-after portraitists of his time. He painted portraits of George Frideric Handel and the Prime Ministers Robert Walpole and William Pitt, among many others. We would like to thank Neil Jeffares, one of the greatest experts on pastel drawings, for the attribution of this work to William Hoare. He confirms that this is an autograph replica of a pastel in the collection of the National Trust, Stourhead (inv. no. 730787). The autograph nature of the present sheet can be identified not only from its quality but also due to the handwritten note on the reverse, which identifies it as being commissioned by James Quinn, an actor known to Hoare who lived in Bedford Street between 1748 -51.

William Hoare of Bath RA (c.1707-1792) William Hoare of Bath RA (c.1707-1792) Portrait of Mrs Mary Canning (née Petre), half-length, in a white dress and blue wrap; and Portrait of Francis Canning, her husband, half-length, in a plum-coloured coat and gold embroidered waistcoat a pair, pastel, circa 1745 59 x 43cm, in the original carved giltwood frames (2) Provenance: Foxcote House, Ilmington, Warwickshire. Literature: 'Foxcote, The Story of an Estate', Margaret Fisher and Pearl Mitchell. The Catholic family of Canning owned Foxcote in Warwickshire from the 15th century and the house was rebuilt in the early 18th century, probably to the designs of Edward Woodward. William Hoare executed this pair of portraits in the mid-1740s when the sitters were staying in Bath. They share a close similarity with the pair of portraits tentatively identified as William Ffolkes and his wife that now belong to the Bath Preservation Trust at No.1 the Crescent, Bath. Foxcote is at the centre of one of the most impressive and elegant of Cotswold estates, the home to ten generations of the Canning family until the death of Robert Canning in 1848. In the 1960s the estate was purchased by Christopher Boot Holman, heir to Boots the Chemist.
