Note:Born into a largely non-traditional family in 1924, Thomas Sherlock Hodgson grew up on Toronto’s Centre Island. Hodgson’s biography reads as a veritable patchwork of events: a once semi-war artist, a two-time Olympic canoeist, a celebrated artist, a lothario, a well respected teacher, Hodgson seems to have really seen and done it all. His artistic contribution lies in his involvement with the Toronto based abstract expressionist group, Painters Eleven. Known as the “wild ones,” the art group shocked the then conservative mainstream public with their rowdy partying and daring abstract paintings. Despite early hesitation and the uphill battle against lingering traditionalism in both art and politics, Painters Eleven gained public appeal and was instrumental in establishing Abstract Expressionism as a mainstay of Canadian Art. Influenced heavily by the writings of Hungarian photographer and painter Laszlo Maholy-Nagy, Hodgson stated that he “hated realism because it has no esthetic content... In fact, the process of painting is the subject of the painting.” This emphasis on process led him to become a highly experimental artist, employing a variety of props and tools to create bold and innovative pieces. Known as an action painter, large format canvases with bold, rich colours in a variety of mediums are all characteristic of his dynamic work and process. Experimenting briefly with Pop Art between 1965 and 1972, a thematic shift inspired by the Women’s Liberation Movement, Hodgson’s work created during this period is largely considered his attempt at socio-political engagement. Untitled (The Crash) from 1967 falls into this timeframe. The figurative elements, hard edged and brightly coloured cut out motifs, evidence his interest in Pop Art. The fragmented body suggests a critique of female objectification, a contentious topic of discussion at the time. Despite Hodgson’s good intentions, the dismembered body and raucous jumble of debris occupying the majority of the picture plane, which seems to hint at the cat and mouse game of conceal and reveal, largely caters to the male gaze rather than empowering the female subject and viewer.

THOMAS SHERLOCK HODGSON, R.C.A.SPANISH LANDSCAPE WITH OLIVESoil on canvassigned and dated ‘62; also signed on the stretcher 39.75 ins x 56.25 ins; 101 cms x 142.9 cms Provenance:Dorothy Cameron Ltd., TorontoPrivate Collection, TorontoNote:At the time Painters Eleven was founded in 1953, group member Tom Hodgson was producing cubist-derived, semi-abstract paintings based on prosaic objects like fire hydrants or power shovels, often working from his own photographs. There was no common style among the eleven artists; rather they were united by the desire for change and a respect for individuality. Some members (Oscar Cahén, Hortense Gordon, Harold Town) were more advanced in their grasp of New York Abstract Expressionism than was Hodgson, but after 1955 he was soon painting pure abstracts that attracted attention with their brilliant colour combinations, display of exuberant energy and large size. Visiting his show at the Dorothy Cameron Gallery in the fall of 1962 (20 October 20 – 03 November), writer Elizabeth Kilbourn observed that the “swashbuckler” artist was about more than just speed, agility, and panache and had turned into a “creator” (presumably of genuine works of art). He also became notorious for the wild parties he hosted in his studio known as “The Pit.”Hodgson was not given to theorizing, and the work from this period (1956-1964) represents his response to an immediate experience. The seemingly untamed surface of Spanish Landscape with Olives with its paint drippings and rapid brushwork is given order by means of a framework of black brush drawing which, at times thin and overpainted, appears on the surface in a bravura gesture of juicy black paint. Drawing is an integral part of Hodgson’s work. The painting is built up in layers as one colour or mark evokes an idea which is carried out in more marks across the canvas. Perhaps the title indicates the inspiration for the piece; olive green is used liberally, and might have conjured images of olives (the round and ovoid shapes and rows of small bobbles above centre) and of Spain, a producer of olives (the red and yellow of the Spanish flag appear as small patches in the centre). An undulating strip of blue near the top of the picture suggests a sky, turning the image into a “landscape.”

After studying art at Toronto’s Central Technical School and Ontario College of Art (now OCAD University), he worked as a commercial artist (1946-1967) like many of his contemporaries. Having chosen abstraction as his preferred form of artistic expression in the late 1940s, Hodgson became a member of Painters Eleven (1953-1960), a diverse group of abstract painters which included William Ronald, Harold Town and Oscar Cahén. Painters Eleven had no manifesto, but it succeeded in opening the Toronto public’s eyes to new forms of art that went beyond the Group of Seven and Canadian Group of Painters. Hodgson was particularly influenced by the work of Oscar Cahén whose tragic death in 1956 affected him profoundly. The influence of Cahén persists in Checkered Cab in the elongated geometric forms and unusual colour juxtapositions (the flatly painted areas of red and mauve, for example), similar to Cahén’s characteristic combinations of red, pink, violet, blue and black. The tracks left by dripping paint and the rapid free brushwork just left of centre signal the influence of the American Abstract Expressionists known as the action painters; Willem de Kooning, in particular, interested the young Toronto painters. Another influence of the Americans was the large scale of the work. Before Hodgson visited the Pittsburgh International Exhibition of Contemporary Painting in 1955, (in which a work of his was included) he was using masonite as a support which limited the size of his paintings. After seeing the huge oil on canvas paintings in Pittsburgh, he abandoned masonite, returned to stretched canvas, and began painting on a much larger scale.Checkered Cab is characteristic of Hodgson’s work of this period. David Burnett has described the surfaces of these pictures as “energetic, accumulative, and gestural” combining paint of varying thicknesses, drawing and sometimes collage. They record the artist’s response to stimuli in his immediate environment—an album cover, a picture in a magazine, or the distinctive checkered branding of a taxi company. There is a temptation to read the knot of gestural brushwork and two strips of peach-stained canvas on the left side of the picture as a female passenger either entering or alighting from the taxi (Hodgson did figure studies and portraits throughout his career), but the image remains tantalizingly ambiguous.

"A Survey of the Work of 24 Young Canadian Artists." Canadian Art Magazine XVIII.1. 1961.Note:"A Hodgson canvas seems to storm over us, filling our eyes with its swarm of apparently unrelated images... the strange colours are not only the result of a rather eccentric colour sense but also are the result of Hodgson's desire to break away from all traditional usage and create new worlds of space and light."A master of mixed media techniques and materials, Thomas Sherlock Hodgson joined the Painters Eleven group at its founding in 1953. The Canadian collective of abstract artists is recognized for their contribution to abstract expressionism and their influence on the modern art market in Canada. One of the first members of the group to paint on large-scale canvases, Hodgson's Untitled, 1977 is a mixed media action painting typical of the artist's later career. Alive in colour, bold shapes and lines which seem to enter into the space of the viewer, Hodgson's meticulous blending of grey and cream-coloured pigments creates a background from which the marvelous shapes and lines emerge.Originally from Toronto, Ontario, Hodgson's work has been exhibited in over 50 major solo and group exhibitions. He was a member of the Ontario Society of Artists (1954), the Canadian Society of Painters in Water Colour (1954), the Canadian Group of Painters (1956), and an Associate of the Royal Canadian Academy, where he exhibited from 1952 to 1966. His work is featured in many private, corporate and public collections including the National Gallery of Canada and the Art Gallery of Ontario.

It was also the year in which the artist sold his first painting - a gouache exhibited in the eighteenth O.S.A. exhibition at the Art Gallery of Toronto. Alluding to the works of Willem de Kooning, Hodgson's compositions meld abstract, architectural forms with his distinctive use of colour. The forms within this watercolour modulate and move. David Taylor writes, "In 1951-1952, Hodgson's painting changed in style. Instead of painting pure abstracts, he turned his attention to depicting natural subjects... He would first take a photograph and then make a painting (based on the snap-shot), distorting the original object. An example of this technique is Hodgson's watercolour Wheelbarrow... Within those familiar shapes he has distorted almost everything... The composition becomes more complex, thus providing more interest for the eye."

Exhibited: Seventh Annual Exhibition, Art Gallery of Hamilton, Ontario, 1955. Note: Tom Hodgson joined the Painters Eleven group at its founding in 1953. His "Non Objective" (1955) is alive with rich colour, bold shapes and lines which seem to enter into the space of the viewer. The artist's meticulous blending of grey and cream-coloured pigments creates a background from which the marvelous shapes and lines emerge. In 1955, Hodgson would abandon masonite in favour of painting upon large canvases, similar in size to those artworks he saw while participating in the Carnegie International Exhibition of Contemporary Paintings at the Carnegie Museum of Art in Pittsburgh.

Each of the Eleven had their own style; they had come together in order to be known formally as a group, and also as a way to increase their likelihood of exhibiting and selling work. Hodgson worked mainly in the style of lyrical abstraction. He preferred the female figure - painting chaotic, sensual semi-nudes - but also painted still lifes. His watercolours are perhaps the most lyrical of his abstractions, owing in part to their assured, fluid lines and floating washes of colour. Defined with graphite, brightened with pastel and further elaborated by watercolour and gouache, Still Life is no exception to this, with the outside lines and inside shapes of the forms hinting at what they actually are; a black-capped bottle, a book and perhaps a glass.

Unafraid of experimentation, Hodgson's idea was to invite the viewer or collector to become involved in manipulating the finished product. Several of these paintings were unstretched canvases. Payne's Grey consists of two layers of canvas fabric with the addition of metal grommets, wood slats, tacks and a clothespin to anchor or loosen elements of the surface. The artist is quoted as saying ""For me, process is more important than content.""

Also shown at the Koffler Gallery, Toronto; the Art Gallery of Peterborough; Oakville Galleries; Brampton Public Library & Art Gallery; Robert McLaughlin Gallery, Oshawa; Rodman Hall Arts Centre, St. Catharines; Tom Thomson Memorial Gallery, Owen Sound; and Grimsby Public Art Gallery.Literature: David G. Taylor, Tom Hodgson, Lynnwood Arts Centre, Simcoe, 1988, page 35, reproduced.Note: Hodgson's Sharon is a marvelous juxtaposition of realism and abstraction. David Taylor describes the composition: "The two heads of the same face are superimposed on top of the other so that there are two ears seen together...The head that is furthest away from the viewer is painted in monochrome and is the larger of the two. The abstract elements are two triangles that slice through the heads and are placed one above the other so that the tips meet at a point where the eye of the nearest head would be." This artwork was painted during Hodgson's experimental "Pop Art interlude" that spanned the mid-1960s to the early 1970s. Sharon indicates a bridge between abstraction and representational art, the striking colouring and textured surface melding with the delicate contours of the subject's face. Hodgson's appreciation for bold colour and design likely stemmed from his long career in advertising and commercial art. From 1968 to 1972, Hodgson taught painting at The Ontario College of Art in Toronto.

Beginning with their emergence in the mid 1950s and extending into the eventful 1960s, the Abstract Expressionist painters shook up the previously staid Toronto scene. The daring Hodgson was known for his wild parties with his artist friends at his studio, the Pit. In one legendary event, women took off their blouses as Hodgson sketched them; he then posted the drawings on the wall. Hodgson imbued Decolletage & Chantilly Lace with his love of the female form. At first glance, the composition seems chaotic, but soon reveals the subject to be the nude torso and face of a woman. Broad brush-strokes, surface textures and strong dark and light contrasts create a field that seems to leap from the surface. Although the work is abstracted, it makes explicit reference to the eroticism of the female figure and, together with the physicality of the use of paint, is drenched in lyrical sensuality.

Thomas Sherlock Hodgson 1924 - 2006 Canadian oil on canvas Thelonious at the Five Spot #1 50 x 50 inches 127 x 127 centimeters signed and dated 1963 and on verso titled and inscribed "Riverside" Provenance: Private Collection, British Columbia Thelonious at the Five Spot #1 is a direct representation of the energy that had newly emerged onto the Toronto arts scene with the success of Painters Eleven. After the group's official disbandment in 1960, Tom Hodgson continued to display his flair for Abstract Expressionism and for hosting social gatherings - this work being a combination of both talents. Hodgson's studio, the Pit, was the unofficial party quarters during the late 1950s and throughout the 1960s for Hodgson and his painter friends. During one notably interesting evening at the Pit, one of Hodgson's studio models stood in front of a slide show frame while his colourful abstract images were projected onto her body as she danced to the jazz music of famous pianist and composer Thelonious Monk. The title refers to Monk's recordings at the famous Five Spot Café in New York. This legendary jazz club was a popular haunt for artists, and Willem de Kooning, Franz Kline and Joan Mitchell were regulars. Hodgson had his own distinct visual rhythm, which is clearly manifest in this work through broad brush-strokes, varied textures and a sense of spontaneity.
