Liberator of figuration Today, Karl Horst Hödicke is considered one of the most important representatives of ' Neue Figuration (New Figuration)'. With his large-format, colourful works, he made a decisive contribution to the figurative painting of the post-war period. Hödicke's artistic position formed an antithesis to the abstract art that prevailed in the 1960s. Born in Nuremberg, the painter moved to Berlin with his family in 1957 at the age of 19. During his youth in southern Germany, he increasingly came into contact with works by the 'Der Blaue Reiter' group. The radiant colourfulness of the works had a decisive influence on his decision to become an artist and was later reflected in his own oeuvre. Chronicler of the metropolis The painters of the 'New Figuration', including Georg Baselitz, Jörg Immendorff and A.R. Penck, revolted against what they saw as the overly intellectual and inaccessible German informal style. Hödicke's oeuvre deals with the thematic complex of the metropolis, in particular with West Berlin as his place of work. However, he does not see himself as a pure chronicler, but rather documents sensory impressions and the attitude to life. Hödicke captures various urban scenes with a dynamic gesture. He works not only with a brush, but also with his own squeegee technique, with which he creates an increasingly anonymous and less personal gesture. This goes hand in hand with the anonymous atmosphere of the metropolis. Hödicke's view of Berlin This large-format work from 1977 shows a typical Berlin scene. It is a stealthy view from one of the backyards, past unadorned, largely windowless facades that reveal a view of a classicist building. The small green area almost seems like a cell of resistance in the dreary grey of the big city. A rich, deep blue sky crowns the scenery and inevitably reminds the viewer of Hödicke's enthusiasm for the visual language of the artists' group "Der Blaue Reiter". The work demonstrates Hödicke's outstanding abilities, which brought German figurative painting back to international importance for the first time after the Second World War. Signiert und betitelt. - Im oberen Rand blasse längliche Braunflecken. In den Ecken mit Einstichlöchern eh. Montierung, verso kleine Montierungsspuren. Insgesamt sehr gut. Serielles Unikat. Durch die individuelle Überarbeitung der s/w Photographien durch Gouache ist unsere Arbeit ein serielles Unikat. - Hödickes Arbeit ist im Rahmen der "Ersten Biennale Berlin" 1974 entstanden, die von Markus Lüpertz organisiert wurde. Für die Finanzierung der Biennale wurden insgesamt 30 Sammlermappen mit je 10 Originalwerken teilnehmender Künstler angefertigt und verkauft. Hödickes Beitrag waren überarbeitete Fotos. Thema aller beigesteuerten Arbeiten des Künstlers waren Photographien von Westberliner Häuseransichten und -wänden. Gouache over b/w photpgraphy on smooth photographic paper.Signed and titled. - Faint elongated borwn stains on upper margin. With pinholes in the corners, on the verso with traces of former mounting. Overall very good. Serial unique piece. - By individually reworking the b/w photographs with gouache, our work is a unique serial piece. - Hödicke's work was created as part of the "First Berlin Biennale" in 1974 which was organised by Markus Lüpertz. A total of 30 collector's portfolios, each containing 10 original works by participating artists, were produced and sold to finance the Biennale. Hödicke's contribution were reworked photographs as ours. The subject of all his works were photographs of West Berlin house views and walls.

Online_Modern and Contemporary Art Hödicke, Karl Horst Magic window cleaner III und IV. (1968/69). Farbserigraphie (beidseitig) auf Bütten und Offset und Metallfolie auf gefaltetem leichtem Karton. Blattmaß von 64,5 x 38 cm bis 45 x 32 cm. Je signiert und nummeriert. - Die beiden Serigraphien je auf einer Hälfte des Bogens platziert, der gefaltet werden soll. Teils mit kl. Anschmutzungen u. etw. offset. 1 Arbeit in gefaltetem Layer innenliegend. Insgesamt sehr gut erhalten, die Serigraphie ausgezeichnet und samtig im Druck. Eines von 180 Exemplaren bzw. einer röm. nummerierten Auflage. Color serigraphy (double-sided) on laid paper and offset and metal foil on folded light cardboard. Each signed and numbered. - The sheet partially minimally soiled and with some offset. Overall very well preserved, the serigraph in excellent, velvety print. - One of 180 roman numbered copies.

Himmel über Schöneberg -- Gouache auf Velin. 1977. -- 60 x 85 cm. -- Unten rechts mit Bleistift signiert "Hödicke" und datiert. -- -- Ein roter Himmel. Der Blick fällt vom Boden gerade aufwärts, entlang an schwarzen Hausfassaden empor ins tiefe Rot des Himmels. Breite, zügige Pinselstriche hinterlassen ihre Spuren in der wässrig aufgetragenen Farbe. Souverän bewegt sich Hödicke mit seiner großformatigen Darstellung sowohl kompositorisch als auch technisch zwischen Abstraktion und Gegenständlichkeit.
