Paul Hoecker (1854-1910) In 1874, Paul Hoecker began his studies at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich under the guidance of the genre and landscape painter Wilhelm von Diez. In 1882, he went to Paris, later to Holstein and then returned to Munich. He there met Fritz von Uhde and Max Liebermann, who would have a deep impact on his art. About 1884, he moved to Berlin. Back in Munich in 1888, he devoted himself to a naturalistic style of painting and the elaboration of light and shadow effects. In 1891, this was followed by a professorship at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Munich. In 1892, he was involved in the foundation of the Munich Secession. In 1901, he moved back to his hometown Oberlangenau. The Langenau Hoecker House with the artist’s studio was then overtaken by his niece Vally Walter. Today works of the artist are, for instance, at the Museum of Fine Arts in Leipzig and the Neue Pinakothek in Munich.
