(Anversa, 1542 - Vienna, 1600) Apollo e Dafne con cornice di fiori, frutti, insetti e una conchiglia (1598-1600 circa) Tempera e oro su pergamena, mm 210X275 Ricondotta al catalogo di Joris Hoefnagel da Elena de Laurentiis, la pergamena raffigura l'episodio di Apollo e Dafne tratto dalle Metamorfosi di Ovidio (1, 452-567) e descrive il momento in cui la ninfa si trasforma in un cespuglio d'alloro. La scena è altresì contornata da fiori, frutti, insetti e una conchiglia, mentre sul cartiglio in alto del medaglione si legge l'iscrizione 'Virginitate frui', un verso tratto dallo stesso mito ovidiano e allusivo al tema della castità. L'autore, come sappiamo, è noto per le sue 'cabinet miniatures', ovvero piccoli dipinti eseguiti a tempera incorniciati a guisa di quadri. La pergamena in esame trova confronto con l'Allegoria della Vanitas entro un medaglione ovale, un putto che regge un teschio e una clessidra in un paesaggio, circondato da una natura morta con piccoli animaletti e delle rose, appartenente alle collezioni del British Museum di Londra, che, firmata e datata da Joris Hoefnagel nel 1598, è ritenuta un'opera di collaborazione tra l'artista e suo figlio Jacob, al quale è stata riferita la figura centrale per il modellato morbido e una stesura più puntinata e sfumata rispetto a quella paterna. Pertanto, l'Apollo e Dafne qui esaminato, per la composizione, la stesura e i motivi naturalistici, si deve invece alla esclusiva mano di Joris e in un momento prossimo all'opera londinese. The city, which had 15,000 inhabitants even in Roman times, is constructed in the manner of a fortress. (Taschen) Civitates Orbis Terrarum: Between 1572 and 1617 Georg Braun (1541-1622) and Frans Hogenberg (1535-1590) published the Civitates Orbis Terrarum: in six volumes, containing about 530 maps of mostly European cities. Georg Braun was the editor of this series, and Frans Hogenberg was the most important engraver. They relied mainly on existing maps, but also on maps made by drawings made by the Antwerp artist Joris Hoefnagel (1542-1600), who had travelled through most of Western Europe. After Joris Hoefnagel's death his son Jakob continued the work for the Civitates. Georg Braun (also Brunus, Bruin; 1541 – 10 March 1622) was a topo-geographer.[1] From 1572 to 1617 he edited the Civitates orbis terrarum, which contains 546 prospects, bird's-eye views and maps of cities from all around the world.[2] He was the principal editor of the work, he acquired the tables, hired the artists, and wrote the texts. He died as an octogenarian in 1622, as the only survivor of the original team to witness the publication of volume VI in 1617. Frans Hogenberg (1535–1590) was a Flemish and German painter, engraver, and mapmaker. Hogenberg was born in Mechelen as the son of Nicolaas Hogenberg.[1] In 1568 he was banned from Antwerp by the Duke of Alva and travelled to London, where he stayed a few years before emigrating to Cologne.[1] He is known for portraits and topographical views as well as historical allegories. He also produced scenes of contemporary historical events.
