Inkjet print on matt polyester foil ‘HP’ USA, 2001, later print Thomas Höpker (b. 1936) - German photographer and director; member of the Magnum Photos agency Signed ‘Th. Höpker’ in black felt pen, stamp-numbered ‘8/20’ and with the stamp ‘„© Thomas Höpker/Magnum‘ on the reverse Full title ‘Blick Von Williamsburg, Brooklyn, Auf Manhattan, 11. September 2001’ Image dimensions: 50.8 x 75 cm; sheet: 60.3 x 92.5 cm Framed: 76.5 x 106.5 cm Provenance: Private collection, Southern Germany One of the most controversial images of the events of 9/11, 2001 in New York When Thomas Höpker was not able to reach the World Trade Center, in order to take pictures of the attacked Twin Towers in flames, he photographed the scene from the waterside promenade in Brooklyn. The next day he decided not to publish the picture present here showing with five young people seemingly unimpressed by the tragedy taking place in the background. Only five years later, it was published in the book ‘Watching the World Change: The Stories Behind the Images of 9/11’, causing the public discussions that Höpker wanted to avoid immediately after the terrorist attacks. Condition: The image and the polyester foil are somewhat yellowed within the mat window. Otherwise the condition is good. The photograph is mounted to a mat with photo corners. The frame is in a good condition with only slight signs of wear. The image measures 50.8 x 75 cm, the sheet 60.3 x 92.5 cm. The framed dimensions are 76.5 x 106.5 cm Thomas Höpker (b. in 1936) Born in Munich and since 1976 based in New York City, Thomas Höpker experimented with a plate camera already at an early age. In the 1950s, he studied art history and archeology in Munich at the University of Göttingen. Since 1964 he worked as a photojournalist for the ‘stern’. Since 1971 he also worked as a filmmaker and cinematographer. In 1974 he moved to the GDR by request of the ‘stern’ and eventually to New York City in 1976. He became a member of the photo agency Magnum Photos, and its president and vice president in 1989. Höpker is considered a representative of ‘concerned photography’, a kind of humanistic photojournalism. In other words, he creates subtle portraits in misery countries, pleading in favor of more justice in the world. Höpker is also well recorded for his urban and landscape shots. Particularly well known is his poignant photograph to the catastrophe of September 11, 2001. (fea) Shipping costs excl. statutory VAT and plus 2,5% (+VAT) shipping insurance. Thomas Höpker (b. in 1936) Born in Munich and since 1976 based in New York City, Thomas Höpker experimented with a plate camera already at an early age. (cko) Shipping costs excl. statutory VAT and plus 2,5% (+VAT) shipping insurance.
