Hofer was dismissed from his teaching position at the art school in Berlin-Charlottenburg in 1934 and three years later his works were removed from German museums, a selection of which were displayed at the 1937 Entartete Kunst (Degenerate Art) exhibition in Munich. Hofer was banned from painting and exhibiting under the Nazi regime, until 1943 when a large part of his work was destroyed. Hofer gradually recovered from this experience from 1947 onwards. The vibrant colour palette and quiet optimism of the work created a year later reflects this newfound confidence. Bathed in warm, muted blues and oranges, it recalls the lively, flirtatious boudoir scenes by Fragonard or Boucher, whose Venus is only partially covered by a white cloth, and stands before opulent turquoise curtains under a blue sky, surrounded by putti. It is the classic romantic motif of the voyeuristic scene of a female nude at her toilet. But it is also an intimate, interpersonal, caring portrait in which the two women do not communicate with the viewer, but with each other, tacitly trusting. The Biedermeier backdrop is so ingeniously broken up by the static composition, with its strong contouring and clearly divided colour fields, that it reflects both the tradition of art, the presence of art, and the interpersonal sensitivities of the time.
