    CHARLES HOFF (1905–1975)

    Est: €1,400 - €1,600

CHARLES HOFF (1905–1975) | Emile Griffith vs Benny Paret, New York 1962 | Vintage silver print, double-weight single-matte paper, good condition 26,8 x 34 cm “N.Y. DAILY NEWS PHOTO” credit stamp with handwritten photographer’s credit and several handwritten annotations in ink and pencil on the reverse Der Kubaner Benny Kid Paret (1937–1962) war seit 1960 Weltmeister im Weltergewicht. The Cuban Benny Kid Paret (1937–1962) had been world welterweight champion since 1960. In April 1961 he lost the title to his arch-rival Emile Griffith (1938–2013) by knockout in the thirteenth round, but won it back on points the same year. On 24 March 1962, it came to the third duel for the world welterweight championship against Griffith. Before the fight at Madison Square Garden, Paret is said to have whispered the words “Faggot, I'll get you both, you and your husband” in Griffith’s ear. Griffith became enraged and was only held back with difficulty by friends. In the sixth round, Paret had Griffith down and the latter was saved by the gong as he took heavy hits. In the twelfth round, however, Griffith landed a series of punches and Paret finally fainted. He went into a coma and died ten days later at the age of 25.
