William (1697) Hogarth Sold at Auction Prices

Painter, copperplate engraver, Etcher, Caricaturist, Miniature painter, b. 1697 - d. 1764

William Hogarth's artwork ran the gamut from portraiture to more satirical works. William Hogarth's paintings were influenced by French and Italian paintings and engravings of the human form. As a realist, his paintings took on the expression and movement of humanity and often depicted the more undesirable parts of society. Hogarth prints vary from weddings to traveling showgirls and festivals.

William Hogarth's artwork also included engravings that were so frequently copied that he lobbied for the Copyright Act of 1735 to help protect him and his fellow artists. His satirical engravings and work in literary endeavors remain among his most recognizable works to this day. Around the 1740s, he began doing sittings of middle-class personalities. You can buy antique portrait paintings online or at auction to bring character and personality to your home.

  • Hogarth William - The Industrious Prentice - Lord Mayor of London - Etching on paper (1747)
    Apr. 15, 2025

Hogarth William - The Industrious Prentice - Lord Mayor of London - Etching on paper (1747)

    Est: £400 - £500

The Industrious Prentice - Lord Mayor of London is an original etching print realized by William Hogarth in 1747. Signature on the plate on the lower right, with the description on the lower. Good conditions, with some foxing. Engraving after William Hogarth's third of the four paintings The Humours of an Election (1754-58), his last painted cycle about contemporary affairs. The paintings are now in Sir John Soane's Museum, London. Hogarth shifted his attention from the squalor of urban life to the corruption of the political world. He drew inspiration from the notorious contest between the liberal Whig party and the conservative Tory party to win Oxfordshire’s parliamentary seats in the General Election of 1754. Hogarth depicts the four 'humours' of an election, and, in this plate, he scrutinizes the electoral process itself. The Polling is the third scene of the series, and depicts the voters at the polling stand with two candidates. Each side tries to extract votes from whomever they can whilst disputing the other side’s right to do the same.

William Hogarth (1697-1764) English, (2) Satirical Engraving Prints

    Est: $200 - $400

William Hogarth (1697-1764) English, (2) Satirical Engraving Prints. One titled "Beer Street," the other titled "Gin Lane." Both depict debauchery and degenerate behavior by a bunch of people who are really shwasted. Matching frames.  Overall Size: 23 1/2 x 20 in.  Sight Size: 16 x 13 in.  #6473 .    William Hogarth was born on November 10th, 1697 in London into a lower-middle-class family. In his youth he took up an apprenticeship with the engraver Ellis Gamble, but did not complete it as his father underwent periods of mixed fortune, and was at one time imprisoned in lieu of payment of outstanding debts, an event that is thought to have informed William’s style and subject matter. In 1720 Hogarth enrolled at the original St. Martin’s Lane Academy in Peter Court, London, which was run by Louis Chéron and John Vanderbank. However, the academy seems to have stopped operating in 1724, around the same time that Vanderbank fled to France in order to avoid creditors. Hogarth then enrolled in another drawing school in Covent Garden which was run by Sir James Thornhill, Serjeant Painter to the King. Hogarth became a member of the Rose and Crown Club, and was by then a well-regarded engraver in his own right. In 1727 he was hired by Joshua Morris, a tapestry worker, to prepare a design for the Element of Earth. In the following years he turned his attention to the production of small “conversation pieces” (groups in oil of full-length portraits from 12 to 15 inches high). Some of his best regarded works were of actors, dignitaries, and prisoners awaiting their execution. In 1729 he eloped with Jane Thornhill, the daughter of his mentor. In 1731 Hogarth completed the earliest of his series of moral works, A Harlot’s Progress, a body of work that led to wide recognition and an almost immediate sequel, A Rake’s Progress. When their success resulted in numerous pirated reproductions, Hogarth lobbied in Parliament for greater legal control given to artists over their work. The result was the Engravers’ Copyright Act (known generally as “Hogarth’s Act”), which went into effect in 1735 and was the first English copyright law to deal with visual works, as well as the first to recognize the authorial rights of an individual artist. More and more influenced by French and Italian painting and engraving, Hogarth’s became famous throughout Europe for their mostly satirical caricatures, sometimes bawdily sexual, in frankly realistic portraiture. They were mass-produced via multiple printmakers in his lifetime, making him one of the most significant successful English artists of his generation, and his subjects, like forced marriages, alcoholism, dehumanizing industrial work, and class divisions even sparked open debates and social reforms. Hogarth was also a popular portrait painter, establishing a genre of theatrical portraiture by inserting contemporary subjects into historical events and themes. Either despite or because of his success, however, he did not earn a strong reputation among other artists of his day, often criticized for his subject matter, exacting detail, and prolific output. His main home was in Leicester Square, but he bought a country retreat in Chiswick in 1749 now known as Hogarth’s House, and spent much of the rest of his life there. The Hogarths had no children, but fostered many foundling children, and he was a founding Governor of the Foundling Hospital. Hogarth wrote and published his ideas of artistic design in his book The Analysis of Beauty (1753), and later followed it with Apology for Painters (1761). He was working on an autobiography when he died suddenly from convulsions (likely an aneurysm) on October 26th, 1764. His influence on continental book illustrations lasted throughout the 18th, 19th and 20th Centuries, and had an effect on the work of painters, writers, and musicians across Europe and beyond.

    Est: $1,000 - $1,500

Etching and engraving by celebrated English artist William Hogarth (1697-1764). It is titled A Rakes Progress, Plate 2 and we believe it was published in 1796 by GGWJ Robinson in London, which makes it after the original which was produced in 1735. This piece was impressed on thick, handmade paper. With frame, it measures 20 inches x 26 inches. It is matted and framed under glass, and it was acquired from a Metro Washington DC estate. It has been examined outside of the frame and it appears to have some toning and a slight bit of foxing around the edges. But otherwise, a wonderful old piece.

Etching with engraving and stipple engraving on wove paper (no watermark), plate size 35.8 x 23.4cm, sheet size 39.8 x 26.4cm, priced 1 shilling in the plate, remnants of paper mount adhering to verso [Paulson 214.1] First state of one of the best-known political caricatures of the 18th century, showing the radical politician holding the cap of Liberty while seated next to numbers 17 and 45 of his newspaper, the North Briton, established to attack the Bute ministry which Wilkes viewed as a vehicle for a Scottish and Jacobite takeover of English government. Numbers 17 and 45 respectively contained attacks on Hogarth for accepting the patronage of George III, and on George III himself for the disadvantageous terms of the Treaty of Paris, which brought to an end the Seven Years' War. Hogarth's grotesque depiction of his adversary backfired and became adopted as an emblem of the radical movement.

William Hogarth (1697-1764) English, "A Harlot's Progress" Engraving Print. Depicts plate #6 from one of his most famous series. Attribution bottom right, number of plate bottom left, both in print. No glass. Original label on reverse.  Overall Size: 24 x 29 in.  Sight Size: 13 1/4 x 16 1/4 in.  #5055   William Hogarth was born on November 10th, 1697 in London into a lower-middle-class family.
