Note: Alexandre Hogue grew up in the Dallas, Texas area and had his first art-related job as an illustrator for the Dallas Morning News. In 1921 Hogue moved to New York City to work with advertising firms, but he returned to Texas every summer to draw with Charles Franklin Reaugh. In 1925 he returned to Texas to concentrate on his art and in the 30s he became associated with the Dallas Nine. He also frequently visited the Taos art colony where he met and worked with Ernest Blumenschein and W. Herbert Dunton. His works from this period reflect Hogue's interests in animals, landscapes, and life during the Dust Bowl era. Following WWII, he became the head of the art department at the University of Tulsa. His work continued to evolve becoming more abstract, metaphysical and concerned with the relationship between people and the land.

      Alexandre Hogue (OK, TX, MO, 1898-1994), "The Gate - Taos." Oil on artist's board landscape painting depicting a fence with a red gate and a large tree with pueblo in the background. Signed and dated: Alexandre Hogue /'27 lower right. Titled, signed, and dated: The gate-Taos/October 1927/Alexandre Hogue, with artist's address: 912 Moreland Dallas, Texas, en verso. Housed in original gilded Art and Crafts frame, 2-3/4" wide. Board: 6" H x 8" W. Framed - 11 3/4" H x 13 1/2" W. American, early 20th century. Biography (courtesy Askart: The Artists' Bluebook): Alexander Hogue was a painter, printmaker, and muralist known for his Dust Bowl series and early 20th-century depictions of Indian life in Taos, New Mexico. In Taos, where he first arrived in 1926, he was especially interested in the Pueblo Indians' spiritual lives and relationship to the land. From 1945, he held an art faculty position at The University of Tulsa in Oklahoma, having taught earlier at Texas State College for Women in Denton, and the Hockaday School for Girls in Dallas. His formal art education was at the College of Art and Design in Minneapolis, and he was a student of Texas artist Frank Reaugh. He was an illustrator and cartoonist for the Dallas Times-Herald, and in Texas did black and white lithographs of the oil fields. In Dallas, he lived at 912 Moreland Street. His works are included in the following museums: Musee National D'Art Moderen Pompidou Center Paris, Dallas Museum of Art, Museum of Fine Arts Houston, Harry Ranson Center University of Texas at Austin and the Art Museum of South Texas.       ALEXANDRE HOGUE Cap Rock Ranch. Lithograph on cream wove paper. 175x300 mm; 7x11 3/4 inches, full margins. Signed and titled in pencil, lower margin. Published by Associated American Artists, New York. A very good impression of this scarce lithograph. Hogue (1898-1984) was born in Missouri and studied briefly at the Minneapolis College of Art and Design (1919) before moving to Dallas for employment as an illustrator at the Dallas Morning News. He took up painting in the 1930s and soon developed a loyal following for his Southwestern and Midwestern landscapes of the Dust Bowl era. From 1945 to 1963, he was the head of the art department at the University of Tulsa.
