The poster is for an exhibition of electrical products being held in honor of the 100th anniversary of the birth of Volta, the inventor of an instrument for measuring electricity (voltmeter), and the man who defined a single unit of it, a volt, as "the electron drive force which, when applied to the conductor with the resistance of one ohm, produces a current of one ampere." Tosca. ca. 1899.

        Est: $2,000 - $2,500

ARTIST: ADOLFO HOHENSTEIN (1854-1928) SIZE: 9 3/4 x 13 5/8 in./24.8 x 34.5 cm PRINTER: G. Ricordi, Milano DESCRIPTION: This variant of Hohenstein’s famous poster was printed for a piano score cover. The image depicts the dramatic climax of the opera. Scarpia, the police chief, has asked for Tosca’s love in exchange for the release of her arrested lover, Cavaradossi. She goes along with his proposal on the basis that he will forgive Cavaradossi, to which he agrees. But as soon as she receives the pardon, she stabs the police chief and places two candles beside him and a crucifix on his chest. But even so, the other guards have continued following orders to kill Tosca’s lover; she throws herself off a high wall to her death. This murky melodrama, full of high passion and double-crosses, was originally a stage play by Victorien Sardou in 1887, written expressly for Sarah Bernhardt. Why Puccini, who was known for composing lyrical, gentle music, was attracted to such a tragic piece is not clear, but his opera, which premiered in Rome on January 14, 1900, quickly became a classic—as did Hohenstein’s incredibly dramatic poster. Condition B: extensive overpainting in margins; repaired tears, creases and overpainting in image and along vertical and horizontal folds. Three-sheets. Framed. Hohenstein designed this monumental and beautifully ornate poster for the National Hygiene Exhibition in Naples. Touting the benefits of fresh air and water, Hohenstein illustrates a "Fountain of Life," being enjoyed by a Classically-styled nude family, with a peacock at their side. Set off by gold ink background, florals and undulating decorative frames, the rich blue ink of the poster further emphasizes the element of water. The swirling lines separating the text from image are reminiscent of the artist's poster of the same year for Monte Carlo / Tir Aux Pigeons (see Swann sale 2467, Lot 222). The small, later version of this large-scale poster was printed in the commemorative Ricordi portfolio in 1914. Ricordi 161, Manifesti p. 60.

        Tosca. 1899.

        Est: $15,000 - $20,000

ARTIST: ADOLFO HOHENSTEIN (1854-1928) SIZE: 52 3/4 x 112 1/2 in./134 x 285.8 cm PRINTER: G. Ricordi, Milano DESCRIPTION: This spectacular three-sheet poster depicts the dramatic climax of the opera. Rare! (Art Nouveau; Opera; Italian)

Monaco / Exposition de Canots Automobiles. 1900.

ARTIST: ADOLFO HOHENSTEIN (1854-1928) SIZE: 33 1/4 x 48 in./84.5 x 122 cm PRINTER: Ricordi, Milano DESCRIPTION: Hohenstein’s design for a motorboat exhibition and race is simple but spectacular: from aboard a boat, looking across the bows of a smart helmswoman, we see the waters off Monaco teeming with craft and sparkling in the sun. The artist returns to his trademark method for balancing the visual interest of a distant background versus a large format figure, which in this case is a charming lady: he allots most of the color to the former, and renders the latter in a few sparse lines and the brown of the paper. ARTIST: ADOLFO HOHENSTEIN (1854-1928) SIZE: 12 1/8 x 23 5/8 in./31 x 60 cm PRINTER: L. Simonetti, Torino DESCRIPTION: Considered to be the Chéret of Italian poster designers, Hohenstein had the ability of taking the mundane and making it elegant and allegorical, if not otherworldly. He certainly does not disappoint here in this elaborate composition advertising Dr. Craveri’s safety matches. Around the turn of the century, laws were being put into effect all over Europe banning the use of white phosphorus in the manufacture of matches, primarily because it stuck to the skin, causing serious burns. Therefore, safety matches, featuring red phosphorous, were growing exponentially in popularity. Here, a fire goddess of Renaissance-worthy beauty is sending the smoky darkness, complete with ominous snake, into oblivion. This is the smaller format. (Art Nouveau; Italian)

ADOLFO HOHENSTEIN (1854-1928) "PRIMAVERA" VEGLIONE DELLA FAMIGLIA ARTISTICA. 1898. 112x18 1/2 inches, 284 1/2x47 cm. G. Ricordi & C., Milan. Condition B: replaced losses, repaired tears, creases and overpainting along seams and horizontal folds. Four-sheets. Framed. Born in Russia to German parents, Hohenstein studied art in Vienna before settling in Milan. He began working with Ricordi, the great Italian publishing company in 1889, designing sheet music covers for operas. Shortly thereafter, he became Art Director of the firm and began to design posters himself. Working for him at Ricordi were among the most famous Italian poster artists of the era, such as Dudovich, Mauzan and Metlicovitz, whose posters reflect Hohenstein's influence as one of the masters of the Golden Age of Italian posters, "from obvious stylistic floral influences of French Art Nouveau and the German Jugendstil" (Manifesti Italiano, p. 114). Hohenstein was invited to work outside of Italy, in France as well as Belgium, where he designed at least two posters printed by the Belgian printing house J.L. Goffart. The Liberty Style at the turn of the century was triumphant in Italy, while the fascination for posters had begun to wane in France. This playful image advertises one of the Milan Carnivals that were fashionable in the late nineteenth and first half of the twentieth century, usually a week or so after the Venice Carnival in February or March. Many of these balls and celebrations were organized by municipal organizations or the "Milanese artistic family" - this one at the Teatro Lirico. A rare poster, in an unusual narrow format; another copy can be found in the Collezione Salce of the Museo Nationale in Treviso. Not in Ricordi.

Modiano, Milano DESCRIPTION: In one of the most exquisite posters for a jeweler ever created, Hohenstein depicts a willowy young beauty sifting through an overflowing jewelry box. Meanwhile, in the background of this two-sheet image, we catch a dreamy glimpse of the storefront in Milan. “Hohenstein can stand as a father to the Italian poster. Although he certainly had an eye on Mucha and, like him, loved large elongated formats, the similarity stops there. His figures were treated with impeccable photographic realism, and colored with a palette of dazzling richness which plays with the effects of light and shade” (Weill, p. 84).
