              Nov. 12, 2024

              Ludwig Hohlwein, Turf

              Est: $12,000 - $15,000

Ludwig Hohlwein Turf 1909 sheet (each): 19.375 h x 19.875 w in (49 x 50 cm) image (each): 14.875 h x 15.125 w in (38 x 38 cm) This complete Turf portfolio of twelve hand-signed plates features a dramatic array—both competitive and social—of equestrian events that amply displays both Hohlwein's love of horses and his abundant skill of portraying them. Hohlwein was a passionate huntsman and horse rider. In this series, he brilliantly portrays all the aspects and sequences of a day at the race track: the arrival of spectators by coach, the riders in front of the grandstand, presenting the favorite horses, riders in the midst of the race, the drama of an overthrow, and the winning jockey. "The Turf series shows the marked influence with exceeding clarity of English archetypes, particularly that of William Nicholson, one of the two 'Beggarstaff Brothers'" (Hohlwein, p. 133). This lot includes the complete portfolio and the original presentation case. Rare! (12) Graphia, München. Each plate signed to lower right corner 'Ludwig Hohlwein'. Signed and numbered to interior of presentation case 'No 28 Ludwig Hohlwein'. Literature: Hohlwein, 132 & 133; PAI-LXXXV, 317 This work will ship from Lambertville, New Jersey.

              Oct. 22, 2024

Original Vintage Germany 1936 Olympics by Ludwig Hohlwein Skiing

              Est: $4,000 - $5,000

This is a poster for the 1936 Winter Olympic Games, which were held in Germany. A victorious skier basks in the glory of his victory in the Alpine location that was used for the ski events, Garmisch-Partenkirchen. This design was extremely popular; it was printed in 13 languages and also used on smaller flyers and brochures. This is the English version. The Winter Olympic Games were held in Garmisch-Partenkirchen from February 6 - 16. These Games featured 17 events in 4 sports. These preceded the better known 1936 Summer Olympics held in Berlin, Germany where Jesse Owens won multiple medals and upset Adolf Hitler and his rising Nazi regime. Ludwig Hohlwein (1874 - 1949) is an important figure in the history of poster design. He was trained as an architect but changed his career to advertising at age 30 (in 1904). He was among first artists to reject the Art Nouveau style and helped to usher in the Art Deco style in Europe. Over his career he created over 400 posters, and often depicted animals, such as this image for Panther brand shoes from the 1920s. This is an Original Vintage Poster; it is not a reproduction. This poster is conservation mounted, linen backed, and in excellent condition. We guarantee the authenticity of all of our posters.

Hohlwein’s “special way of applying colors, letting them dry at different times, and printing one on top of the other, producing modulations of shading, has often been copied, but never equaled. He belonged to no school or group, his art and personality are an unprecedented phenomenon in the history of German poster art” (Rademacher, p. 22). (Art Nouveau; Exhibitions; German)

Hohlwein u.a, Ludwig Umfangreiche Sammlung mit Werken des Künstlers. Ca. 1910-1948. - 8 Original-Postkarten. Um 1912-1939. Die Altehrwürdige Donaustadt 1926, Bayerischer Blumentag. Offizielle Postkarte 1912. Sammelt euch im NS-Reichskriegerbund 1939. Pk des Württembergischer Landesverein für Kriegerheimstätten um 1918, Baustein zum Zoologischen Garten München. Engelhardt. Bockbier um 1919, Deutscher Rundflug. Verso in Graphit bezeichnet u. punktuell auf Unterlage montiert. 1 Bl. am Rand leicht gebräunt. - Beigegeben: Original Postkarte "Das Matterhorn lächelt" von E. Hansen (Emil Nolde). 1897. Chromolithographie auf Papier. Drucksigniert. Extensive collection with works by the artist. - The "Munich poster king" Ludwig Hohlwein (1874-1949) was a pioneer of advertising art, which was still in its infancy in the early 19th century. With his innovative advertising graphics and his extremely modern packaging design, he shaped the brand image of renowned companies. Due to his memorable style, in which the themes of animals, hunting, technology and landscape recurred, and the resulting high recognition value of his works, the artist himself became a kind of brand. Even before the seizure of power, Hohlwein joined the NASDP and made an early mark on the visual image of the National Socialists, for example during the 1936 Olympic Games in his adopted home of Munich. After the war, he was briefly banned from working as part of the denazification process. - This collection contains: Postcard with original watercolours. - 8 original postcards. - 7 bookplates for various person. - Enclosed: Original postcard "Das Matterhorn lächelt" by E. Hansen (Emil Nolde).

Original Vintage Wilhelm Mozer German Restaurant Poster by Ludwig Hohlwein 1909 Munich

              Est: $2,400 - $3,500

Dining out in the Munich of 1909 was clearly an exercise in excess, as shown in this poster by Ludwig Hohlwein for the Wilhelm Mozer restaurant. An elegantly appointed table overflows with riches - lobster, champagne, liqueurs; this is the place to be for a fanciful night out on the town! This poster is done in the style of the Secession movement, an art style that sought to eliminate the distinction between decorative and fine arts, and artists and craftsmen. This movement yielded important artists such as Gustav Klimt and Egon Schiele, and later evolved into the Bauhaus movement.
