[ILLUSTRATION ART]. HOKINSON, Helen E. (American, 1893-1949). “But when Colonel Marshall told the club that life as we know it in Westchester is doomed surely he must have meant it humorously!” Original ink and wash drawing for a preliminary cartoon in The New Yorker magazine. [1942]. Signed by the artist in the lower right hand corner. Captioned in pencil beneath the image (possibly in another hand). Matted and framed under glass. Sight 11 ¾ x 12 ½”. Frame size 19 ½ x 20”. Some toning, a few editing marks, some wear to frame. This appears to be an early draft of a cartoon that eventually appeared in The New Yorker on October 31, 1942 (this image is of several matronly women in a restaurant; the final image was that of a matron at a dinner party with the Colonel, asking him the above question (slightly re-worded)). Hokinson was one of the main cartoonists for The New Yorker, and at least one of her cartoons ran in the magazine every issue, until her death in 1949 due to an aviation accident. Not examined out of frame.
