Katsushika Hokusai prints convey a sense of timelessness and the power of nature. Virtually everyone recognizes the Katsushika Hokusai wave painting The Great Wave off Kanagawa. This piece is part of his series Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji, which he created during the 1830s. Katsushika Hokusai artwork includes other sets of nature prints, including Unusual Views of Celebrated Bridges in the Provinces, A Tour of the Waterfalls of the Provinces, and Oceans of Wisdom.

In addition to his nature prints, Katsushika Hokusai produced brush paintings and book illustrations. In 1814, he created the popular book of drawings Hokusai Manga as a workbook for aspiring artists. He also created erotica (shunga) using the woodblock print technique known as ukiyo-e.                          "Ukiyo-e" woodblock print on rice paper, known as “nishiki-e”. The 36 prints are bound in concertina with flyleaves decorated with fragments of silver leaf.   The prints are woodcut titled and hand-signed.   The original edition was published in 1830 to great acclaim, as it was the largest series of ‘nishiki-e’ dedicated solely to landscape published in the Japanese Empire. Nishimuraya Yohachi and his disciples were some of the leading publishers of "ukiyo-e" in Japan from the late 18th century and were based in Nihonbashi under the name of Eijudö. The publication was so well received by the audience that ten more prints were published in 1831, thus complementing the collection. Thus, from 1834 onwards, the publications contained forty-six engravings. Hokusai himself supervised the inking process, experimenting freely with colours and modifying them in numerous variations [1]. These publications were stamped with the publisher's seal to guarantee censorship [2].    This lot is part of later publications, circa 1840, as it includes thirty-one prints from the original publication and five from the later one. As we have already mentioned, censorship seals were an element that determined the quality of the work, and in this case we can see this mark, as two of the prints bear the censorship seal (‘Kiwame’) and the signature of the publisher Nishimuraya Yohachi (Eijudö), who acted as censor.   This lot is part of later publications, circa 1840, as it includes thirty-one prints from the original publication and five from the later one.                         Woodcut engraving on rice paper. Japanese yotsume toji binding.   This publication is part of fifteen volumes known as ‘Hokusai Manga’, the present one being volume number 5. The series initially comprised ten volumes, published between 1814 and 1819. The first edition of the fifth volume was published in 1816. The popularity of the series led the publishers to add five more volumes in 1878. Altogether, the entire collection contains some 4,000 woodcut drawings on a variety of subjects ranging from historical characters to everyday customs and manners depicting Japan of the time, fauna, flora, grotesque characters, architectural elements, etc.   After the success of the first volume, the following ones were published simultaneously in Nagoya and Edo (present-day Tokyo until 1868). Hokusai himself as well as five disciples and followers took part in the process of preparing the volumes in both Nagoya and Edo.[2] The present volume number 5, in particular, was published by Hokusai himself.   This volume number 5 focuses on temple architecture, temple ceremonies, contemplative scholars, Heian period ladies, nobles, samurai lords, deities and Oni demons typical of Japanese folklore. On the other hand, in this volume, we can also find a view of Mount Fuji and a storm scene at sea. This graphic compilation was intended to serve as an instruction manual and models for young artists and craftsmen, manuals known as "e-dehon". [1]   Present condition of the lot: It has two white paint stains on the cover and losses. On the last page there are two galleries and the paper is weakened on the first and last pages.                         Hokusai, Katsushika. Haichû no Fuji (Der Fuji in der Trinkschale). Nishiki-e Holzschnitt der Serie Fugaku Hyakkei (japonice: 100 Ansichten des Berges Fuji). Format chûban tate-e. 22,5 x 16 cm. Auf Karton montiert unter Passepartout. 48,5 x 34 cm. Japan um 1849. -- Ein älterer, barhäuptiger Mann mit einem Wanderstab und einer Kalebasse am Gürtel rastet unter einem Baum und erfreut sich an der Spiegelung des Fuji in seiner Trinkschale. Hinter ihm steht ein Korb mit einem Phönix, dessen phantastisches Schwanzgefieder sich um den Baumstamm windet. Kalebasse, Wanderstab und Phönix, als Symbole für ein langes Leben, sind Attribute, die in Kunst und Kunstgewerbe häufig den taoistischen Eremiten beigegeben werden. Der Miniatur-Fuji im Weinschälchen weist auf die magische Kunst der alten Weisen hin – Rechts im weißen Rand mit winzigen Löchlein einer früheren Bindung. Papierbedingt gebräunt.

Edo (Tokio) 1834. -- Katsushika Hokusai war einer der wichtigsten Vertreter des Ukiyo-e-Genres. Er gestaltete das Buch "Fugaku Hyakkei" mit zahlreichen Holzschnitten, aus dem auch unsere beiden vorliegenden sind. – Mit kleinen Fehlstellen (Darstellung nicht betroffen) und vereinzelt leicht berieben.

Mit Passepartout unter Glas in einfacher Holzleiste (46 x 61 cm). Edo (Tokio) um 1830-1831. -- Aus der popülären Serie von Katsushika Hokusai (1760-1849) "36 Ansichten des Berges Fuji", die der begabte Künstler dann auf 46 Ansichten erweiterte, dieses ist das erste der Erweiterung. "Unbestritten gilt diese Serie als Hokusais Meisterwerk im Bereich des Farbholzschnitts. Das im Westen bekannteste japanische Kunstwerk, die sogenannte 'Große Welle vor Kanagawa'", gehört auch zu dieser Serie. Auf jedem Blatt ist im Hintergrund der Fuji zu sehen, hier erscheint er zwischen mehreren Kirschblüten. – Kleine, wenige Löchlein, etwas berieben und minimal fleckig. Mit Stempel (stark verblasst) und kleiner Knickspur und Retusche. Nicht ausgerahmt, Versand nur ohne Rahmen.
