      ASIAN: Three 19th C. Japanese wood block prints: first signed by Shunkosai Hokushu (Japanese, active 1802-1832), c. 1820, depicting bare foot woman in pale apricot-colored robes tucking something into folds of multi-colored obi, ss: 13 7/8" h. x 9 1/4" w.; second signed by Kunisada, depicting woman wrapped in dark blue scarf conversing with seated man, not laid down, slipping within frame, ss: 14 1/8" h. x 9 3/4" w.; and third depicting geisha in blue domestic interior, face turned towards circular window with birds, cherry blossom tree, and mountain, appears to be unsigned, maybe a page from an illustrated book, original auction label verso, not laid down, tiny holes along left margin, some wavering to paper, ss: 1/2" h. x 4 1/2" w., all enclosed in bird's eye maple frames.

      HOKUSHU TOHONAN (ACTIF ENTRE 1808 ET 1832) Kyogoku no takumi Nakamura Utaemon Nakamura Utaemon dans le rôle de Kyogoku Takumi Dans la nuit, Takumi tue le Maître d'escrime Ichimisai qui l'avait vaincu. Ses filles le poursuivent. Il sera retrouvé et battu à mort par l'aînée avec son fiancé, Koyamura Rokusuke. Le portrait de l'acteur vu dans un éventail est vêtu d'un kimono orné de son mon, coiffé comme un brigand : ses cheveux sont hérissés. Grimaçant, il montre sa langue et est muni d'une épée dont on ne voit que la poignée. En bas, on lit une louange à sa gloire : Isse ichiai Kyogen. Cette pièce fut le plus grand succès de l'acteur. Celui-ci Nakamura Utaemon III (1778-1838), représenté sur cette estampe «d'acteur» joue le rôle de Kyogoku Takumi (pièce Hikosan Gongen Chikai no sukedachi). Serment prêté au nom de la déité du mont Hikosan, jouée au théâtre Yosaburo à Osaka en 1825. Signé : Shunko sai hokushu ga.
