      • KAREL HOLAN (Czech / Bohemian 1893 - 1953) - A snowy quarry
        Nov. 25, 2024

        KAREL HOLAN (Czech / Bohemian 1893 - 1953) - A snowy quarry

        Est: -

1945 | technique: oil on wooden board | 37.5 x 52 cm | signature: bottom right | framed Lot description Karel Holan was a Czech painter whose works often reflect the melancholy and gloomy atmosphere of the Czech landscape. This painting entitled "Snowy Quarry" from 1945 is a typical example of Holan's work, in which he focuses on the non-idealized reality of nature, often with a strong emotional charge. The composition of the image is based on the contrast of the snowy landscape and the raw walls of the quarry. Here, Holan uses muted color tones and strong textures that give the image a certain roughness and depth. Leafless trees leaning over the snowy road emphasize the sense of desolation and quiet calm of the winter landscape. The painting "Snowy Quarry" is a strong expression of Holan's ability to capture the rawness and melancholy of Czech nature, especially in the post-war years, when personal and social experiences from the Second World War are reflected in his work. This work represents an important example of his landscape painting work and his sensitive handling of atmosphere and mood in his paintings.

        A VIEW OF WINTERTIME PRAGUE

        Est: -

Through thick layers of brown and white paint, this masterful painting uniquely and inimitably depicts the fleeting beauty of everyday moments in the Czech capital. Karel Holan was a Czech painter, printmaker, illustrator and teacher. He studied drawing privately under Vácav Beneš and Otakar Nejedlý. In 1913 he entered the Czech Technical University to study architecture, but he never graduated because he was enlisted during World War I and was wounded in action. After he was discharged in 1915, he entered the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague and studied under professors Maximilián Pirner, Karel Krattner and Vlaho Bukovac. He was a member of Umělecká Beseda and in 1924 he co-founded and later became the spiritual leade of the Ho-Ho-Ko-Ko Social Group. Holan was also a member of the Mánes Union of Fine Artists and Myslbek Union of Fine Artists. His work is represented at the Gallery of Fine Arts in Ostrava, Prague City Gallery, and Gallery of Modern Art in Hradec Králové.

This winter cityscape dates to the 1930s, when Holan was exhibiting tendencies towards New Realism and painting the mood of the city from his frequent walks in Prague. Masterfully, with thick layers of brown and white paint, he depicts the sunny corners of ancient Prague and its suburbs, uniquely presenting its fleeting beauty in everyday snapshots of the Czech capital.
