The author, William Jacob Holland (1848 – 1932) was Chancellor of Pittsburgh University and Director of the Carnegie Museum, being a good friend of Andrew Carnegie. He was an accomplished zoologist and paleontologist. He supervised the mounting of several casts of the sauropod dinosaur Diplodocus in natural History museums abroad as a gift of Carnegie. And this book is partly about his trip to Argentina to carry out one of those installations. He was America’s greatest authority on butterflies and moths writing the key text on both and donating his 250,00 specimen collection … of course to the Carnegie. The book largely a travel account covers the voyage south, Bahia, Rio de Janeiro, Santos, Montevideo and the River Plate, La Plata, Argentina, Buenos Aires, the delta of the Parana, the Mysterious Beast, The Presentation of the Diplodocus, Tucuman, Sao Paulo and the trip home with Trinidad and the Antilles.
