Alvin Carl Hollingsworth (1928-2000) Limited Edition Lithograph. 1979 Edition of only 250. Signed titled and numbered in pencil by the artist. In carved wood frame with mat, Measures 28"x32"x2". Weight 10 pds. Alvin Hollingsworth, comic-strip illustrator and painter, was born in New York City and began drawing at the age of four, and by the time he was twelve, he was an artist assistant at Holyoke Publishing Company for Catman's Comics. A year later he was doing illustrations for Crime Comics. His paintings dealt with themes of contemporary social issues such as the Civil Rights Movement, women's struggles, spiritual concepts, jazz, city life, time and space and dance. He was also a mural designer, author, poet, and lecturer. He graduated from the High School of Music and Art in New York City and then graduated Phi Beta Kappa from City College of New York with a fine arts degree. He later did graduate work. NBC network hired him to tour the East Coast lecturing and demonstrating painting and to host a ten-part series, "You're Part of Art." As a result, he became a widely known figure in the art world. By 1953, he was creating his own comic strip that was nationally syndicated by the Associated Press in one-hundred forty newspapers. From 1980 until his retirement in 1998, Hollingsworth was a full Professor of Art at Hostos Community College of the City University of New York.

Al Hollingsworth 1928-2000 Family Tree color lithograph c. 1970 signed and titled AP Provenance: The Estate of Kathlyn "Elaine" Moragne. Ms. Moragne grew up near the Cabrini Green housing complex in Chicago. At a time when women, especially African American, experienced significant barriers to education, Elaine her BA in psychopathology from University of Illinois (1958) and her MS in clinical nutrition from Rush University. Throughout her life, Elaine demonstrated her commitment to the economic revitalization and cultural recognition of the Black community, spearheading the work of Southside bank, starting a radio station in Boston supporting the needs of minority residents, and serving on the Women's Board of the Chicago Urban League. She was involved with the South Side Community Art Center for 20 plus years, and supported the work of African American artists, both financially and in an administrative capacity. She helped establish the loaning program at the Art Institute of Chicago, allowing homeowners to borrow or rent certain works to display in their homes. We are indebted to Lisa Morange-Kayser, Elaine's daughter, for providing this information. 20 x 16 inches
