AL 1852' on the boat Dimensions: 102 x 127.5 cm Gilt wooden frame: 128.5 x 154 cm Very good condition Condition: Inspection under UV light shows large retouches, especially in the areas of the margin, the sand and the sky. There is a patch on the reverse. The stretcher measures 102 x 127.5 cm and the dimensions of the gilt wooden frame are 128.5 x 154 cm. John Hollins (1798-1855) John Hollins was the son of a Birmingham glass painter. Already in 1819 and 1821 he exhibited portraits at the Royal Academy. Hollins lived in Italy between 1825 and 1827 and after his return he was often represented at the Royal Academy, the British Institution and the Old and the New Water Color Society. Besides portraits and costume figures, he loved to paint scenes of the works of Shakespeare, Goethe, Boccaccio, Goldsmith, Lesage etc. as well as landscapes. Hollins was elected Associate of the Royal Academy in 1842. In his paintings he recorded for example the 'Preparations for a balloon ride from London to Weilburg in Germany in 1836 including portraits of different involved contemporaries'.
