Fabergé Family The Fabergé family originated from Picardy, a region in Northern France. In 1685 they emigrated to East Germany and settled in Schwedt an der Oder northeast of Berlin for 115 years. Peter Fabergé moved to Pärnu in the Baltic States in 1800, where Gustav Fabergé was born in 1814. He eventually came to St. Petersburg, where he initially began to study as a pupil of the goldsmith Andreas Ferdinand Spiegel and later as a pupil of the jeweler and goldsmith Johann Wilhelm Keibel. In 1842 Gustav opened his own goldsmith's workshop. Shortly after the birth of the second son (1846 Peter Carl and 1862 Agathon) Gustav went to Dresden in 1962; his friend and colleague H. Pedin continued to operate the jewelry store in St. Petersburg. Peter Carl, the eldest son, followed the footsteps of his father and absolved an apprenticeship as a goldsmith at the traditional goldsmith's school in Hanau. He returned to St. Petersburg in 1870, where he joined his father's company and took over the management in 1872. That year he married Augusta Jacob. All four sons from this marriage (Eugene, Agathon, Alexander and Nicholas) went on to work in the company. The first outstanding success was achieved in 1882 with the presentation of copies of ancient Scythian treasures at the Russian Federal Exhibition in Moscow, where Carl received a gold medal. At this time Carl's brother Agathon joined the firm as a designer and master craftsman, whose sketches have served as foundation for several jewelry items. After an exhibition in Stockholm in 1897, Fabergé was appointed official jeweler of the Scandinavian kingdom. For the imperial Easter eggs, which were presented at the World Exhibition in 1890, Carl Fabergé was awarded the Legion of Honor medal and the title ‘Maître of the Paris Goldsmiths Guild’. Over time, stores were opened worldwide (London, Kiev, Odessa, etc.) and the company expanded steadily. In 2009 the company was re-launched after a break, and still today benefits from the expertise and guidance of Carl’s two great-granddaughters, Tatiana and Sarah Fabergé. More and more artists specialized in this genre and increasingly refined their manufacturing techniques. Today we are still fascinated by the immediacy of the depicted people.
