Thorolf Holmboe Art for Sale at Auction

Landscape painter, Naval painter, Commercial artist, Painter, Illustrator

(born Vefsen, Norway 10 May 1866; died Oslo, Norway 1935) Norwegian painter, draughtsman, designer. Starting at a young age, Thorolf Holmboe was strongly encouraged by his father to take up art. He first started his art education with a Norwegian landscape artist but in 1886 he left for Berlin where he studied under Hans Gude and went on to study further at the royal school of art in Oslo. Most well known for his landscapes, Holmboe also did seascapes. Growing up by the sea he developed a strong affinity for the ocean, which played a major influence in Holmboe’s career. He later went on to work in the decorative arts. His art has been featured in exhibition in Munich in 1891 and Paris in 1900, and has rather recently been shown in From Dahl to Munch: Romanticism, Realism, and Symbolism in Norwegian Landscape Painting at the Palazzo del Diamanti in Ferrara, Italy in 2001.
