      CHARLES W. HOLMES (DATES UNKNOWN) MONTREAL / BOSTON & MAINE RAILROAD. 44 1/2x29 1/2 inches, 113x75 cm. University Press, Cambridge, Mass. Condition A-: minor repaired tears and creases in margins; small replaced loss at bottom right edge. Holmes, who was an illustrator primarily focused on depicting horses, also designed an exceptional series of at least five posters for the Boston & Maine Railraod, four of which featured bright, elegant, interwar New England get-a-ways, such as "The Boat Train," "Old Orchard Beach," "Revere Beach" and "Lake Winnepesaukee." This is his only nocturnal image and the only poster promoting that line's route north to Canada. Rare - previously unrecorded.

      SIR CHARLES HOLMES (1868-1936) THE TOWER OF OXFORD CASTLE signed dated verso: Oxford Castle / C.J. Holmes 1905 oil on board 30.5 x 20.0cm / 12.0 x 7.8in unframed Sir Charles Holmes was a renowned art historian, as well as an artist in his own right. He studied etching under William Strang, and began exhibiting at the New English Art Club in 1900, becoming a member in 1905. He edited the esteemed Burlington magazine between 1903-1909 and was Slade Professor at Oxford between 1904-1910. He was made Director of the National Portrait Gallery between 1909-1916, going on to be Director of the National Gallery from 1916-1928.

Note: In 1900 Holmes began exhibiting with the NEAC, he began co-editor of the Burlington Magazine in 1903 and then took up a position of Slade Professor of Fine Art at Oxford. In 1909 he became director of the National Portrait Gallery a position he held until 1916 when he moved to become director of the National Gallery. He was knighted in 1921.
