    • MILOSLAV HOLÝ 1897 - 1974 - A LANDSCAPE
      Jun. 17, 2021

      MILOSLAV HOLÝ 1897 - 1974 - A LANDSCAPE

      Est: -

Unlike his role model Antonín Slavíček, who worked to create panoramic views, Miloslav Holý selected views of small sections of the landscape. As epitomized in this beautiful example, intense color was one of his main means of expression; the painting depicts a momentary experience of the atmosphere. Holý studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague under Jan Preisler, Vlaho Bukovac and Jakub Obrovský, and he also attended printmaking courses led by Max Švabinský. He played an important role in the Ho Ho Ko Ko Social Group, which he co-founded with Karel Holan, Pravoslav Kotík and Karel Kotrba in 1924. Technique: Oil on canvas, Signed: Lower right "M Holý 46"

Stilleben mit Beeren und zwei Gefäßen Öl auf Leinwand. 1952. 50,2 x 40,6 cm. Unten rechts mit Pinsel in Dunkelgrün signiert "M. Holý" und datiert. Holý studiert an der Akademie der bildenden Künste in Prag bei Jan Preisler, Vlaho Bukovac, Jakub Obrovsky und Graphik bei Max Svabinsky. • BOUQUET IN A VASE
      Jun. 06, 2019

      BOUQUET IN A VASE

      Est: -

Bouquet in a Vase presents Holý’s favorite theme. He particularly focused on floral compositions in the 1920s, when his palette brightened and gained vitality under the influence of his study trips to Paris and Brittany. This bouquet is an exemplary piece from Holý’s work during the First Czechoslovak Republic, which shines with the celebration of life and democracy. The impasto flowers are executed with energetic strokes of the brush, bringing together the painter’s lifelong interest in expression and colorism. He exhibited extensively in Czechoslovakia and abroad (France, United States, Italy), and later became a professor at the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague. He still drew on French exmplars in the 1940s, with the open landscapes and vivid colors he saw during his study residences in France in the late 1920s. Later (from the 1950s) the colors darken, dominated by green and again a certain trend towards Neo-impressionism. Miloslav Holý’s oeuvre is represented in all major Czech galleries. He is also the author of several articles and memoirs.

    • MILOSLAV HOLY (1897-1974): STILL LIFE WITH GLASSWARE
      Dec. 06, 2018

MILOSLAV HOLY (1897-1974): STILL LIFE WITH GLASSWARE

      Est: -

1930 60 x 81.5 cm (h x w) Signed lower right: “M. Holy 30”. On reverse: label from “XXI Biennale Internationale des Beaux-Arts, Venice 1938” Holy favored still lifes and landscapes, subjects he repeatedly returned to throughout his life. Still Life with Glass 1930 was painted at a time when Holý was absorbing new impressions from his travels throughout France and was a member of the Mánes Union of Fine Artists. Influenced by the Union, he palette adopted brighter colors and his brushwork became more liberated. In this work one can notice the gentle color transitions and white accents, which join with his expressiveness to create a harmonious whole. Holý studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague under Jan Preisler, Vlaho Bukavac and Jakub Obrovsky, and he also attended printmaking courses led by Max Svabinsky. He played an important role in the Ho Ho Ko Ko Social Group, which he co-founded with Karel Holan, Pravoslav Kotík and Karel Kotrba in 1924. The group primarily focused on realistic subjects and social themes. Throughout his life Holý was orientated towards expressionism, which is evident not only in his impasto landscape paintings, but also in his paintings of the urban outskirts, which are often imbued with a sense of sombreness and melancholy. HOLY Miloslav (4. 7. 1897 Prague - 3. 3. 1974 Prague) Cottages Oil on canvas mounted on plywood, 28 x 37,5 cm, framed, undated, signed lower right. Czech painter and graphic artist, he studied under professor Bukovac, J. Obrovsky and M. Svabinsky at the Academy of Arts in Prague. Together with K. Holan, P. Kotik and K. Kotrba he founded a group called Social group. He was a member of Umelecka beseda and SCUG Hollar. He belonged to the generation affected by World War I, which resulted in his concern with social subjects in the 1920s. He depicted the life of common people and motifs from the working class outskirts of Prague. After the mid-1920s he turned to landscapes and townscapes, he also produced still-lifes, portraits and nudes. The year 1927 was a turning point in his career; he abandoned figural themes, but still remained sensitive to social aspects. In terms of palette he responded to the French Fauves, in the 1930s he reduced linear elements. He developed a new landscape model, concentrating on space and colour, inspired by Impressionism. During World War II he turned to intimate subjects, family life and nudes. In the 1960s he returned to landscapes of subdued colours. See T 1/362, TD 72, V 2/479, B 5/599, Ch 3/238, NECVU 1/277.
