Gaspar Homar (Buñola, Mallorca, 1870-Barcelona, 1953) Dormitorio modernista, c.1905. GASPAR HOMAR MEZQUIDA (Bunyola, Mallorca, 1870 - Barcelona, 1953). Hallway furniture with mirror, ca.1900-1910. Mahogany wood. Marquetry with lemongrass and mother-of-pearl. Brass hangers. Use marks. Measurements: 240 x 130 x 26 cm. This important modernist hall furniture designed by the cabinetmaker Gaspar Homar has a large soffit embellished with delicate floral motifs in marquetry. The lower part has two plinths or bases, one on each side. Semicircular in section, they are attached to the structure and are adorned with floral garlands in marquetry of lemongrass and other fruitwoods. Both elements are repeated in the upper part of the structure, but transformed into corbels or shelves. In this way, the symmetry of the whole is respected despite the decorative richness of each detail. The corbels are decorated with appliqués or hangers in metal embossed with palmettes. The compositional centre is dominated by a large vertical mirror, the upper flanks of which are decorated with finely carved festoons, emulating bunches of fruit among foliage. A modernist cabinetmaker and decorator, Gaspar Homar began his training at the Escuela de La Lonja in Barcelona, later broadening his knowledge in the workshop of the cabinetmaker Francesc Vidal, who had also been his father's teacher. In 1893, just ten years later, they both opened their own establishment in Barcelona, under the name of P. Homar e Hijo. Two years later his father died, leaving Gaspar in charge of the workshop. During these years he collaborated with Sebastià Junyent, Joan Carreres and Josep Pey Farriol in the design of furniture and complete rooms, with an exquisite richness of design, figurative marquetry on soffits and furniture which are his hallmark, etc. He incorporated exotic woods such as sycamore, banana, mahogany and rosewood. His production of ornamental furniture (chests, umbrella stands, etc.) as well as beds, wardrobes and chairs was well known. His best known works are the complete decoration of the Lleó-Morera (1904), Navàs and Burés houses, as well as several buildings by Gaudí and Doménech i Montaner. He also won, among other awards, the Grand Prize for Furniture and Decoration at the London Exhibition of 1907, the Grand Prize, Gold Medal and Grand Cup at the Esposizione Internazionale Industria-Lavoro Arte Decorativa in Venice (1908) and the Grand Prize at the Exposition Internationale de Confort Moderne in Paris in 1909. GASPAR HOMAR MEZQUIDA (Bunyola, Mallorca, 1870 - Barcelona, 1953). Very important complete modernist dining room set, model "Hadas", 1900-1907. Wood and marquetry. Measurements: 290 x 194 x 54 cm (sideboard); 80 x 150/290 x 102 cm (table); 122 x 43 x 48 cm (chairs). Very important dining set composed of a sideboard, a table with extendable top and six chairs. The dining room model "Hadas" is considered the best made in his career by Gaspar Homar, in 1903, for one of the wealthiest families of the Catalan bourgeoisie of the time, creators of the first large department store in Spain. With exquisite marquetry work (fifteen different woods) and carving, characteristic of Gaspar Homar, of impeccable craftsmanship. The faces and hands of the nymphs are made of birch, brake, sycamore and holly wood in various shades of light tones. The golds are combined with boxwood, doradillo or lemon tree. For the pink and reddish ones, different types of mahogany, amboina, cherry, elm, rosewood and cypress are used. The green ones come from magnolia, banana, majagua and sabina, and the dark ones are obtained from ebony, grenadillo and rosewood. The result is an exceptional piece, distinguishing it from the rest of the works that were made in the general area. The lines of all the furniture that make up this set are stylised and moving, with curves dominating, which are complemented by structural straight lines. The sideboard has two sections, the lower one with drawers and doors and the upper one with two glazed doors, crowned by a balustrade and decorated with carved, polychrome and gilded floral motifs. Particularly noteworthy are the fittings, with their openwork and delicate synthesised vegetal designs, as well as the carefully carved figurative marquetry in the middle section. The table, with an extendable top, is derived from the traditional Hispanic table, although it has been completely reinterpreted in a modernist style. Finally, the chairs have a light structure, stylised and refined in their forms, and are decorated with beautiful marquetry on the back, with delicate and elegant full-length nymphs, accompanied by floral motifs.a modernist cabinetmaker and decorator, Gaspar Homar began his training at the Escuela de La Lonja, in Barcelona, and then broadened his knowledge in the workshop of the cabinetmaker Francesc Vidal, who had also been his father's teacher. Est: €30,000 - €40,000

GASPAR HOMAR MEZQUIDA (Bunyola, Mallorca, 1870 - Barcelona, 1953). Modernist bedroom, ca. 1905. Mahogany wood with carving, marquetry and gilding. Measurements: 182 x 155 cm (headboard); 111 x 155 cm (footboard); 195 cm long benches; 120 x 43 x 42 cm (bedside tables); 315 x 232 x 60 cm (wardrobe). Complete modernist bedroom, one of the best designed by Gaspar Homar throughout his career. It consists of a bed with footboard and headboard, two matching bedside tables and a large wardrobe, all the pieces made to match, with large floral marquetry panels, carved and gilded details and expressive veined veneers. In this marquetry we see a synthesised language that links with the geometric modernism of the United Kingdom and Central Europe, something common in Homar's designs. The wood used for this piece of furniture was the most expensive of the period. The bed follows a similar design in the headboard and footboard, with a sinuous upper profile, slightly curved prismatic legs and a front organised in three sections, separated by pilasters with raised reliefs that support fanciful lobed arches with lowered profiles. Each of these lanes has an irregularly grained, mottled root veneer, which contrasts with the more uniform tone of the wood of the structure. On top of this veneer are floral motifs in floral marquetry, either directly inlaid on the base or with a wide-grained frame of different wood. On the upper part, naturalistic, moving flowers and leaves are meticulously carved in relief in mahogany, set against an irregular, matt background, painted in a golden tone to enhance the volume of the carvings. The decoration of these two pieces is complemented by thistle flowers carved in relief at the corners, a nod to the neo-Gothic style of Homar's training. The tables have an original design with a pointed arch floor plan, which gives them a curved elevation. As usual in Homar's furniture designs, the structure is stylised and light, playing with the contrast between closed and open spaces, always with an eye to functionality. Thus, the lower body, raised on three legs similar to those of the bed, is closed by two curved doors, decorated with veneers and floral marquetry again matching those seen on the bed. Above this lower body is an open space, with a carved floral decoration on the front and a closed back decorated with marquetry in the style that dominates the whole ensemble. Finally, there is the waist, with two drawers, also with curved fronts, floral marquetry on root veneer and cut metal handles with a floral design. Above the waist is a white marble top, and finally the structure is crowned by a rectangular panel with curved sides with a bevelled profile mirror, floral carvings on gilding on the upper part and a very naturalistic top, made up of very moving, carved and openwork leaves. Finally, the cupboard has a monumental architectural structure, typically nineteenth-century, combining ogee arches, stylised floral columns and a classical interplay of arches and lintels on the front. It follows Homar's typical interplay of closed and open spaces, enriched here by the mirrored doors. It consists of a base with drawers, in which we find elements seen in the other pieces: cut-out floral fittings, synthesised floral marquetry with a circular composition and root veneers. Under these drawers we also see the aforementioned carvings in mahogany on gilding. The body of the cabinet is divided into three sections, the central one wider and higher, each with a mirror-fronted door. After his death Gaspar Homar was considered the best Spanish modernist cabinetmaker and creator, his creations were never repeated and were all unique and special designs for his wealthy clients.

GASPAR HOMAR MEZQUIDA (Bunyola, Mallorca, 1870 - Barcelona, 1953). Furniture with modernist sofa, ca. 1905. Mahogany wood with carving, marquetry and gilding. Measurements: 284 x 212 x 66 cm. A piece of furniture of great importance both for its creator, Gaspar Homar, and for the originality of its design, its dimensions, the quality of its materials, the very high level of its craftsmanship and the variety of its decoration. It is an example of the best modernist furniture, both at a formal and technical level and in its very conception, given that it is a piece of furniture that is at once a sofa, a shelf and a wood-panelled panel with a mirror, reflecting the integrating intention of modernism. The artists of modernism tried to integrate the different arts in an organic, natural way, and this also led to the unitary conception of the domestic space, where each small element was designed by the same author, perfectly integrated into the general concept. It is a piece of furniture made of mahogany wood, with different grainings perfectly exploited to achieve contrasts of colours, textures, etc. In the lower part is the sofa, with an open arm on one side and a shelf on two levels on the opposite side. Above the backrest, in proportion to it, is a large rectangular mirror with a bevelled profile. Practically all the secondary areas of the piece of furniture are decorated with marquetry of flowers in a synthesised language, in keeping with the geometric modernism of the United Kingdom and Central Europe, a common feature of Homar's designs. However, at the bottom of the upper level of the side shelf the designer includes a marquetry panel with a different language, more realistic and with smooth lines, directly related to the illustration of Catalan modernism. In this panel we see a woman on her back holding a garland of ears of corn and fruit, against a beautiful landscape background conceived with a language based on planes of Japanese heritage. A modernist cabinetmaker and decorator, Gaspar Homar began his training at the Escuela de La Lonja in Barcelona, and then furthered his knowledge in the workshop of the cabinetmaker Francesc Vidal, who had also been his father's teacher. In 1893, just ten years later, they both opened their own establishment in Barcelona, under the name of P. Homar e Hijo. Two years later his father died, leaving Gaspar in charge of the workshop. GASPAR HOMAR MEZQUIDA (Bunyola, Majorca, 1870 - Barcelona, 1953). Modernist display cabinet, circa 1900. Mahogany wood with carvings and gilding. Measurements: 250 x 132 x 43 cm. Monumental modernist showcase created by Gaspar Homar, one of the great cabinetmakers and decorators of Catalan modernism. It has a structure in mahogany wood, which was the most expensive wood of the time. It is based on classical, architectural forms, but breaks with classicism by playing with asymmetry and the contrast between open and closed spaces. It stands on a low base, with a cut-out profile, four bracket-like feet and vegetal motifs carved in relief, scrolls reminiscent of the classical acanthus set against a gilded background. The main body is organised into three sections, with the central section occupied along its entire height by a glazed door with a segmental arch. This door shows no decoration other than its clean lines, the bevelled glass and the beautiful patterned paper inside, with a typically Art Nouveau design. The two side streets are divided vertically into three, with two openings and a cupboard on the left side and an inverted layout on the right. On the left side there are carved and turned columns, which support a small cupboard with a door carved in relief on gilding, at half height. On the opposite side, on the other hand, this central space is the only one that remains open, with the cupboards above and below. In this case the design of the front changes, thus emphasising the deliberate asymmetry of the design. We see beautifully veined root veneers and large decorative hinges with a Gothic-inspired cut-out profile, in gilded metal. Finally, the piece of furniture is finished off by a last body that is completely open, with a central temple raised on two columns and crowned by a stepped cornice, and a back panel decorated with carvings and root veneers. After his death, Gaspar Homar was considered to be the best Spanish modernist cabinetmaker and creator, his creations were never repeated and were all unique and special designs for his wealthy clients. Translated with www.DeepL.com/Translator (free version) A modernist cabinetmaker and decorator, Gaspar Homar began his training at the La Lonja School in Barcelona, and then furthered his knowledge in the workshop of the cabinetmaker Francesc Vidal, who had also been his father's teacher. In 1893, only ten years later, they both opened their own establishment in Barcelona, under the name of P. Homar e Hijo. Two years later his father died, leaving Gaspar in charge of the workshop. Throughout his fruitful career he took part in exhibitions in London, Madrid, Barcelona, Saragossa and Paris, and was a member of the jury of the 1908 Venice International. Homar began his style within the neo-Gothic trend but soon specialised in Modernisme, a style in which he produced his best works until 1918, later devoting himself to the production of conventional furniture. During these years he collaborated with Sebastià Junyent, Joan Carreres and Josep Pey Farriol in the design of furniture and complete rooms, with an exquisite richness of design, figurative marquetry in soffits and furniture which are his hallmark, etc. Today, pieces of furniture by Gaspar Homar are kept in the Museo Nacional de Arte de

Gaspar Homar (Palma, 1870 – Barcelona, 1955) Modernist umbrella stand with mirror in walnut wood, decorated with branches and flowers in fine woods. Coat racks in bronze with plant shapes. Measurements: 265 x 145 cm Gaspar Homar was a Majorcan cabinetmaker and “ensemblier” based in Barcelona who worked on the decoration of projects by important modernist architects such as Domènech i Montaner. He also collaborated with important artists of the time such as Sebastià Junyent, Josep Pey and Joan Carreras, although the existence of colored watercolor projects and the signature on some of his furniture allow us to identify him as the sole author on many occasions. This is the case of the coat rack that we offer here. The piece, with a few minor variations, is modeled on the colored drawing made by Gaspar Homar himself between 1900 and 1905, currently kept in the Museu Nacional d'Art de Catalunya. Therefore, we can date this exceptional piece of furniture to this period, which coincides with the most brilliant stage of its production, when it received commissions to furnish the interiors of the LLeó Morera house in Bercelona and the Navàs house in Reus. As indicated in the exhibition catalog “Gaspar Homar. Moblista i dissenyador del modernise” organized by Fundació La Caixa in collaboration with the Museu Nacional d´Art de Catalunya. 1998, p. 34: “It is at this moment when Gaspar Homar's furniture reaches notable quotas of refinement and the entire production of objects is approached with a new language in which historicist forms have been replaced by naturalistic motifs that converge in a kind of style. flower with a great decorative effect”.

GASPAR HOMAR MEZQUIDA (Bunyola, Majorca, 1870 - Barcelona, 1953). Modernist showcase. Walnut wood, leaded glass and golden brass applications. Measurements: 225 x 170 x 48 cm. Modernist showcase designed by Gaspar Homar, one of the great cabinetmakers and decorators of Catalan modernism whose designs are a reflection of the welfare and aspirations of the booming bourgeoisie, and are distinguished by the use of expensive hardwoods and by the work of marquetry and carving. It is a piece of furniture entirely made of walnut wood, with gilded brass applications and leaded glass. Its structure is based on the traditional model for this type of cabinet, in the form of a cupboard with two front doors and an interior organized by shelves. These shelves are visible on both sides, while the center shelves are sheltered by the double door at the front. The design is fully modernist, based on the fluidity of the forms that characterized Gaspar Homar's production, with the organic appearance and sinuous profile so typical of this language, highlighting the bulging lines on the sides. Although it follows a symmetrical layout, it is a design clearly framed within modernism in its organic tendency, hence the fluidity of the lines, totally protagonists of the design, which are combined with the decoration of plant stems, leaves and naturalistic flowers. The latter is a characteristic feature of Art Nouveau, of great originality in the history of art, which had previously only been found in Rococo, the Auricular style and Celtic art. A modernist cabinetmaker and decorator, Gaspar Homar began his training at the Escuela de La Lonja, in Barcelona, to later broaden his knowledge in the workshop of the cabinetmaker Francesc Vidal, who had also been his father's teacher. In 1893, only ten years later, both opened their own establishment in Barcelona, under the name of P. Homar e Hijo. Two years later his father died, leaving Gaspar in charge of the workshop. His production of ornamental furniture (chests, umbrella stands, etc.) as well as beds, closets and chairs, was very well known. His best known works are the integral decoration of the Lleó-Morera (1904), Navàs and Burés houses, as well as several buildings by Gaudí and Doménech i Montaner. He also won, among other awards, the Grand Prize for Furniture and Decoration at the London Exhibition of 1907, the Grand Prize, Gold Medal and Grand Cup at the Esposizione Internazionale Industria-Lavoro Arte Decorativa in Venice (1908) and the Grand Prize at the International Exhibition of Modern Comfort in Paris in 1909. Today, pieces of Gaspar Homar's furniture are kept in the National Museum of Art of Catalonia, the Museum of Art Nouveau and Art Deco Casa Lis in Salamanca and the National Museum of Decorative Arts in Madrid, among others.
