        Lorenzo Homar (1913 - 2004) 1972 Artist Proof Serigraph. Signed, titled in pen in lower margin. Homar was an engraver, painter, and printmaker. He studied at Pratt Institute, Brooklyn Museum's School of Art, and Art Students League, all in NY. He worked as a jewelry designer for House of Cartier, and was a founding member of Centro de Arte Puertorriqueno. From 1952-57, he was director of graphic workshops of Division de Educacion a la Comunidad, San Juan, PR, and Instituto de Cultura Puertorriquena from 1957-73, which developed into a resource for discovering young talent. Image Size: 13.5 x 9.5 in. Overall Framed Size: 24.5 x 18.5 in. Framed behind glass.

Condition B+: discoloration in bottom margin; minor losses in top margin; abrasions along right edge affecting image. Silkscreen. Paper. At the time of this poster's creation, Lorenzo Homar was at the top of his game. Dubbed the "Father of Puerto Rican Graphic Arts," Homar earned his title by mentoring and paving the way for countless up-and-coming, young Puerto Rican artists. One of the strong points of Homar's design sense was his work as a calligrapher and a typographer.

        LORENZO HOMAR (1913-2004) LEA EL LIBRO / 5 CUENTOS DE MIEDO. 1953. 30 1/2x17 3/4 inches, 77 1/2x45 cm. Condition A-: minor abrasions in image. Silkscreen. Paper. 5 Cuentos de Miedo (5 Tales of Fear), a book from the series "Libros Para el Pueblo," was printed by DIVEDCO and widely distributed for free as a promotional tool for Governor Luis Muñoz's campaign, emphasizing the use of science over folklore and superstition within the rural school systems. Homar was one of the key figures in Puerto Rican graphic design in the 1950s and 60s. Schooled at New York's Art Students League and Pratt Institute, Homar also worked as an artist at Cartier. In 1953, he became director of DIVEDCO's graphic arts department.
