He joined the East India Company's Madras Artillery as a Cadet in 1768. In 1776 he married Amelia Prime, niece of General Horne, who had also served with the Artillery in India. In 1786, at the time of the war with Tipu Sultan of Mysore, Sydenham was promoted to Lieutenant-Colonel in command of the First Battalion at St Thomas's Mount near Fort St George, Madras, which can be seen in the background of this painting. Home was a fine landscape painter and detailed landscape backgrounds give extra vividness to his portraits. William Sydenham was promoted to Major-General, Commandant of Artillery and AuditorGeneral of Fort St George in January 1801, but died in June of that year. Robert Home was an important recorder of British India in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth century. He studied with Angelica Kauffmann and between 1773 and 1778 worked in Italy. He exhibited twenty paintings at the Royal Academy between 1770 and 1789. His wife died in 1790 and the following year travelled to Madras to seek his fortune, just as General Cornwallis was setting off with the Grand Army for the Third Mysore War against Tipu Sultan. Home accompanied the campaign, making sketches of the forts and engagements; he later produced prints of Select Views in Mysore (1794) and paintings of Lord Cornwallis receiving the sons of Tipu Sultan as hostages and The death of Colonel Moorhouse (both c.1793-4; National Army Museum, London). Influenced by Thomas and William Daniell, who visited Madras in 1792, Home produced a number of landscapes which show exquisite attention to architecture and Indian life. In 1795 Home moved to Calcutta; he made a happy second marriage and his children joined him in India, all four sons becoming members of the East India Company's army. Home, a punctual, amiable and hardworking man, became the chief portrait painter in Calcutta. He painted the Governor-General of India, Marquis Wellesley, and his brother Major-General the Hon. Sir Arthur Wellesley (the future Duke of Wellington), as well as other generals and judges. He made a short visit to Dacca in 1799 to paint the Nawab Nasrat Jang. Home's successful portrait practice was threatened by competition from Thomas Hickey, who arrived in Calcutta in 1807, and by the dashing and eccentric George Chinnery, who arrived in 1811. In 1814 Home took up the post of Court Painter to the Nawab of Oudh at Lucknow. He worked for the Anglophile Nawab Ghazi-ud-din Haidar for thirteen years, painting portraits and court life, and designing Ghazi's crown when he was made King of Oudh in 1819, as well as carriages, boats, furniture, even an elephant goad. Home retired to a 'handsome establishment' at Cawnpore after Ghazi-ud-din's death in 1827, dispensing 'extensive hospitality to the residents of the station' until his own death at the age of eighty-two in 1834

Attributed to Robert Home, 1752-1834 A portrait of Sir Robert Rollo Gillespie (1766-1814) wearing military uniform, Three quarter length, standing in a landscape, a hill-fort in the background , Oil on canvas. Gillespie was born in Comber, Co. Down. He enlisted in the 6th Dragoons Guards in 1783. In 1786 he married Annabell, Daughter of Thomas Taylor of Taylor’s Grange, Co. Dublin. In 1792 he was posted, as a Lieutenant in the 20th Light Dragoons, to The West Indies, where he asserted British Rule in the area. He rose to the rank of Colonel. He returned to England in 1802. In 1804 he was stationed in India, leading the troops which put down the mutiny at Vellore. An action which was important for the prestige of the British in India. When the troops were ordered home in 1807 he changed to the 8th Royal Irish Light Dragoons. In 1809 he was the Commanding Officer in the action against the Sikhs under Runjeet Singh. He was subsequently Commandant at Bangalore and after commanded the Mysore division of the Madras army. In 1811 Gillespie was Commandant in Java. He landed at Batavia and took possession of that city. He successfully directed the attack on the Dutch forces at Cornelis. In 1812 he was sent to Sumatra to quell the rebellion of The Sultan of Palembang. He returned to Java and quelled a rising by local Chiefs, effectively securing the safety of the Europeans on the island. Gillespie became Major-General in 1812 and returned to India. He was appointed to a Command of the Bengal troops, who were engaged in an action against the Nepalese. He was killed on the 31st October 1814 in the assault on the fort at Kalunga. His body was interred at Meerut. A monument to Gillespie, by Sir Francis Chantrey, is in St.Paul’s Cathedral. A commemorative column was erected to his memory in his home town of Comber, Co. Down in 1845. 50 x 40 inches; 127 x 102 cm.

Elizabeth Mitchell, daughter of Sir Charles Mitchell married Alexander Cosby Jackson on October 13th 1811 at St Peters Church, Colombo, Ceylon. Sir Charles Mitchell was a captain in The Naval Service H.E.I.C., knighted at St James March 18th, 1796. Oil on canvas. 30 x 25ins. Note: Robert Home (1752-1834) was a British portrait artist in oils who travelled the Indian Subcontinent in 1791. During his travels he painted several historic scenes. Born in Hill, he studied under Angelica Kauffman in 1777, he left for India in 1790 where he spent many years.

Robert Home 1752-1834 portrait of colonel william sydenham (1753-1801) with his wife amelia both full length, he standing wearing uniform, she seated wearing a white dress, units of the Madras Artillery beyond with St Thomas's Mount in the distance oil on canvas 72 by 77.5 cm., 28 1/4 by 30 1/2 in. This fine conversation piece, painted in Madras in c.1794, shows Colonel William Sydenham who served in the Madras Artillery from 1768 until 1796 when he retired as major-general. He was the son of Samuel Sydenham of Minehead. He married Amelia Prime whose uncle Major Matthew Horne also served with the Artillery in India. They had two sons, Benjamin and Thomas and a daughter Mary Anne who married Major Orr. Benjamin became Secretary to Marquess Wellesley when he was Governor General of India. He served in the Madras Engineers from 1794 to 1808 and was a gifted amateur artist. His brother George became Ambassador to the Court of the Nizam of Hyderabad. Portraits of both boys by John Russell were sold at Sotheby's on 22nd March 2000 (lots 92 and 93). Robert Home came to India in 1791, arriving at Madras in January and staying there until May 1795 when he left for Calcutta. Soon after his arrival Home received permission to accompany Lord Cornwallis's army on its march to Bangalore and he was present at the capture of the town and at Tipu Sultan's surrender of his two sons as hostages at Seringapatam. Home painted a large picture of this celebrated event (National Army Museum, London) and also a portrait of Lord Cornwallis (formerly in the Banqueting Hall, Madras). He also worked with Thomas and William Daniell who visited Madras in March 1792 and painted several large landscapes. However his chief interest was in portraiture and before moving to Calcutta he painted several local residents including Colonel Sydenham.
