Alexandre Homo French, 1840-1889 Chief de la Tribu des Serpents Oregon tenant un fusil dans un paysage, 1862 Signed Alex Homo. (ll); inscribed Quisap/Chef de la tribu/des Serpents. Oregon. and dated 62' (lr) Watercolor on paper 11 1/2 x 8 5/8 inches Provenance: Private collection, Paris Born in Paris, Alexandre Homo was a painter of landscapes and genre scenes in oil and watercolor. He studied with Auguste Pequegnot (1819-1878) and exhibited at the Salon of 1877. This watercolor is the only evidence that Homo visited America. Its subject, as suggested by its inscription, may be a chief of the Northern Paiute, among the tribes belonging to the "Snake Indians" of eastern Oregon. The figure's Western-style clothing, along with his shotgun and pistol suggest the intermixing and hostile encounters of the "Snake Indians" with the gold miners and freight wagons crossing the region to mines in the northeastern Oregon Blue Mountains and in southern Idaho's Boise basin. Homo was living in France in the 1880s and seems to have settled in Normandy. A number of his works belong to the Musée de Bernay. C The Spanierman Gallery, LLC
