Gillis Claesz. de Hondecoeter war ein holländischer Maler, der im flämischen Stil arbeitete und sich auf Landschaften und Vogeldarstellungen spezialisierte. Später malte de Hondecoeter in einem eher niederländischen, realistischen Stil. Gillis war der Vater von Gijsbert d'Hondecoeter und Grossvater von Melchior d'Hondecoeter (1636–1695) und Jan Weenix (um 1641–1719). Seine Tochter Josijntje heirate Jan Baptist Weenix (1621–1659). Gillis malte flämische, hügelige Fantasielandschaften, meist in Verbindung mit einer biblischen Szene. Es heisst, dass er vom flämischen Maler Roelant Savery (1576–1639), der ebenfalls in Amsterdam lebte, beeinflusst wurde. Die Figuren auf seinen Gemälden überliess er meist seinem Kollegen David Vinckboons (1576–1632). Niederländische Maler der nachfolgenden Generation, wie etwa Allart van Everdingen (1621–1675) und Jan Both (1610–1652), liessen sich von seinen Kompositionen inspirieren, was beispielsweise eine um 1647–50 entstandene bergige Waldlandschaft von Jan Both deutlich macht, die sich im Detroit Institute of Arts befindet (Inv.-Nr. 89.31, Ausst.-Kat. Masters of 17th Century Dutch Landscape Painting, hrsg. von Peter Sutton et al., Amsterdam / Boston / Philadelphia 1988, S. 277–278, Kat.-Nr. 14).

Blick auf einen sich durch hügelige Landschaft schlängelnden, kleinen Fluß, links begrenzt von einer bewachsenen Anhöhe mit einem hohen Baum, dessen Zweige bis zur oberen Mitte des Bildes reichen. Rechtsseitig weitere bewachsene Landschaft, in deren Flussnähe zwei graue Ziegenböcke ruhen. Im Wasser und am Uferrand drei weiße Wasservögel; der Fluss endet in der Ferne in einem größeren See unter hohem, fast grauen Himmel mit weißen Wolken. Monogrammed and dated lower right: G.DH / A°1620 Gillis de Hondecoeter was born in Antwerp and was among the earliest Dutch landscape painters. He fled to Holland in 1585, married in Delft in 1602 and moved with his family to Amsterdam in 1610. He specialised in wooded landscapes with overgrown old tree trunks populated by animals of all kinds. His works are influenced by Roelant Savery, who had also moved to Amsterdam and may have been de Hondecoeter's teacher. However, in the present work from 1620, the artist appears to have distanced himself from the cramped compositions of Savery. The piece is characterised by its panoramic effect, sparing use of colour, almost monochrome palette and fine brushwork - all tendencies not necessarily shared by the elder painter.

Der Maler stand unter dem Einluss von Roelant Savery. In der für den Maler typischen Bildaufassung ist auch hier in einer Schneise zwischen knorrigen Eichenbäumen eine hell erleuchtete Häusergruppe zu sehen. Davor auf dem Weg zieht ein Paar mit Kind dem unteren Bildrand entgegen. Die Kleidung, insbesondere des Mannes mit Turban, lässt auf eine Anspielung auf ein biblisches Motiv schließen. Rechts unter Bäumen ein Wirtshaus mit Wirtin am Eingang sowie Personen an einem gedeckten Tisch. Links hinten weitere Häusergruppe mit Ummauerung, ferner etliche amüsante Staffagefiguren im landschaftlichen Gefilde.
