(Map - Colonial Mid-Atlantic United States) Nova Virginiae Tabula

        Est: $1,800 - $2,200

One of the Most Important 17th Century Maps of the Chesapeake Bay. Colonial Mid-Atlantic United States. Henricus Hondius, Nova Virginiae Tabula, from Novus Atlas, 1638-58 (published). Hand Color. This graphic map is Henricus Hondius' version of Capt. John Smith's important map of 1612, drawn from his brother's map of 1618. After the death of Jodocus Hondius in 1629, his widow sold a number of plates to Blaeu. Angry at the sale to a competitor, Henricus and Joannes Jansson engaged engravers to cut new plates, which were largely based on Jodocus' work. This is the 5th derivative of Smith's map. It is beautifully engraved with topographical features and the locations of scores of Indian villages. In the upper left corner is an engraving of the great Indian chief Powhatan seated on his throne and surrounded by his subjects. A Susquehanna chief, facing in toward Chesapeake Bay (opposite of Jodocus' plate), is depicted on the right under a coat of arms. German text on verso, published between 1638-58.

(Map - Asia) Asia Recens Summa Cura Delineata

        Est: $550 - $650

Asia. Hondius/Jansson, Asia Recens Summa Cura Delineata, 1641 (dated). Hand Color. In 1630 Henricus Hondius and Jan Jansson undertook a major revision of the Mercator Atlas in response to fierce competition with the Blaeu family. This map is based on the 1623 map of Asia by Henricus' brother (Jodocus), but without the decorative panels. The map extends from the Arabian Peninsula through the East Indies. There is a wide expanse of ocean between the east coast of Asia and America, which is conveniently hidden by a dedication cartouche. Korea is shown as a long peninsula, and Japan is based on the Ortelius/Teixeira model. This beautiful map became the standard map of Asia throughout the 17th century. Two hunters flank the title cartouche and the map is embellished with a pair of lions, an elephant, European ships, a Chinese sampan, and a sea monster. Latin text on verso, published in 1647.

Magnificent Early Map of the South Pole in Full Contemporary Color. South Pole. Henricus Hondius, Polus Antarcticus, from , 1639 (circa). Hand Color. This early map of the South Pole is considered one of the earliest realistic maps of the Antarctic continent, which is partially delineated in a combination of coastline and strings of islands noted as first discovered by Magellan. The circular map also shows parts of South America, Africa, and Madagascar with the incomplete coastline of Australia. When first published in 1637, this was the first printed map to show the discovery of Pieter Nuyts' Land and was the best map of Australia prior to Tasman's discoveries. Early Dutch explorations in the region are noted. The map is surrounded by fabulous engravings of natives and early explorers. It also features an empty dedication cartouche at left. This is the first state of the map. French text on verso, published in either Nouveau Theatre du Monde (1639-44) or Nouvel Atlas ou Theatre du Monde (1646-49).
