          HONDIUS MAP OF VIRGINIA, 1630

          Est: $4,000 - $6,000

HONDIUS, Henricus (1573 –1650), after John Smith (1580-1631). Nova Virginiae Tabula. Engraving with original hand color. Amsterdam, c. 1630. 19” x 23” sheet, 24” x 27 3/4” framed. This graphic map is Henricus Hondius' version of Capt. John Smith's important map of 1612, drawn from his brother's map of 1618. After the death of Jodocus Hondius in 1629, his widow sold a number of plates to Blaeu. Angry at the sale to a competitor, Henricus and Joannes Jansson engaged engravers to cut new plates, which were largely based on Jodocus' work. This is the 5th derivative of Smith's map. It is beautifully engraved with topographical features and the locations of scores of Indian villages. In the upper left corner is an engraving of the great Indian chief Powhatan seated on his throne and surrounded by his subjects. A Susquehanna chief, facing in toward Chesapeake Bay (opposite of Jodocus' plate), is depicted on the right under a coat of arms. (Burden #228).

HONDIUS, Henricus (1597-1651). Nova Totius Terrarum Orbis Geographica Ac Hydrographica Tabula Auct. Henr: Hondio. Engraving with original hand color. From Atlas Sive Cosmographicae Mediationes… Amsterdam, c. 1630. 18 3/4” x 22 1/2” sheet, 30 1/2” x 34 1/2” framed. Splendid Map of the World from one of the Most Significant and Celebrated 17th-Century Atlases. In 1629, threatened by pending competition from the mapmaking firm of Willem Janszoon Blaeu and his sons, Henricus Hondius and his partner Jan Jansson set about revising the Mercator-Hondius atlas, their most noted production. Mercator, the most celebrated cartographer of the 16th century, died in 1594 after publishing just a few parts of the atlas that he had spent decades preparing. In 1604, the plates for his maps were sold to the great Amsterdam cartographer, Jodocus Hondius, who brought out the first of the so-called "Mercator-Hondius" editions in 1606. Hondius supplemented the original 107 maps with 39 new maps compiled under his own supervision, bringing the total number to 146, and has the original text expanded by Petrus Montanus. The new maps were of extremely high quality, and were for the most part devoted to parts of the world, such as America, that had been neglected by Mercator. Hondius's first edition of the general atlas proved instantly popular, selling out within a year, and he continued to augment and perfect it over the following years, constantly adding new maps and incorporating new discoveries and corrections. In 1629, when Hondius and Jansson revised the world map, it had not been updated for nearly 35 years, and with this splendid map, they signaled a rejuvenation of the atlas and of their business. The new world map is a splendid and ornate example of the best in decorative cartography of the time. The two hemispheres are bordered by sumptuous representations of the four elements and other scenes. In the top corners are portraits of Julius Caesar and Claudius Ptolemy, and in the bottom corners are portraits of the author's father Jodocus Hondius and his mentor Gerard Mercator, all luminaries in the history of geographical innovation. California is represented, in a famous geographical error, as and island, and the map included such new discoveries as part of the north Australia coastline extending towards-New Guinea and a redrawing of north-east Canada with "Queen Anne's forland" (Baffin Island) showing completely encircled by open water. This map is an important and striking work from the Golden Age of Dutch Cartography.

17th C. Dutch Map of the Holy Land by Hondius

          Est: $800 - $1,200

Henricus Hondius (Dutch, 1597-1651). "Situs Terrae Promissionis S.S. Bibliorum intelligentiam exacte aperiens per Chr. Adrichom" ca. 1630s to 1660s. An early edition of Henricus Hondius' map of the Holy Land that was based upon the report of Christian Van Andrichom, a most respected holy land cartographer of the period, and presents with beautiful engravings and hand coloring. A fruit and floral garland, symbolizing the land of plenty, is draped across the top. Below this two putti hold a banner that features a Latin verse. Below the map from left to right are Moses holding the Ten Commandments with Aaron beside him, Jonah and the whale, and a distance scale. In addition, there is German text on the verso. Size of plate mark: 14.5" L x 19.4" W (36.8 cm x 49.3 cm) Size of sheet: 18.1" L x 22.4" W (46 cm x 56.9 cm) Dutch engraver and mapmaker Henricus Hondius came from a prominent cartographic family. His father, Jodocus Hondius, was also a geographer and engraver. During the period when Henricus worked for his father, he was instrumental in the expansion/republishing of Mercator's atlas, which was initially published in 1595 and later republished by Hondius in 1606. Henricus and his brother, Jodocus the Younger took over their father's business after his death in 1612. A few years later, in 1621, Henricus established his own shop and continued to release new editions of the Mercator Atlas. Years later, he would team up with his brother-in-law, Jan Janssonius, in order to continue to expand and publish Mercator’s atlas. The atlas would then become known as the Mercator-Hondius-Janssonius atlas. Est: €100 - €150

[CHILI]. Hendrik HONDIUS (1573-1650). Chili. Amsterdam, circa 1630. Carte gravé sur double page. 37,5 x 48 cm.
