Engraved map of Virginia and the Carolinas with hand-coloring in outline, visible area 17 7/8 x 21 3/4 in. (453 x 552 mm). Framed (unexamined out of frame, some staining lower margin). Inset views of Florida and Virginia settlements, sea monsters, a canoe and ships, and a wild turkey, text on verso in Dutch. Hondius's map combines elements of John White's map of Virginia and Jacques le Moyne's map of Florida as interpreted by Theodor de Bry. "It thus became the most important type of map until the Ogilby-Moxon Description of Carolina ca. 1672; and its influence, both direct and indirect, extends into the middle of the eighteenth century" (Cumming, pp.129-30). Burden 151 ("The map's scale and decorativeness make it very sought after").

A striking map of the Western Hemisphere. Originally engraved by Hondius for the first edition of his Mercator's atlas (1606), this map was meant to appeal to Europeans' curiosity surrounding the New World. "Particularly notable is the native Brazilian scene illustrating the method used to make a local beverage" (Burden).           This originally hand-colored engraving is a map of Africa by Jodocus Hondius entitled Nova Africae tabula. This was the French edition of the map published 1628. The map was first printed in Hondius's Mercator edition atlas in 1606. Jodocus Hondius or Joost de Hondt (1563-1612) was a Dutch engraver and mapmaker. He is best known for his early maps of the New World and Europe. He had inherited and republished the engravings of Mercator, and thus helped to re-establish Mercator's legacy. He and the work of his sons helped establish Amsterdam as the center of cartography in Europe in the 1600s.

This map is significant because it was created the same year that the English established the first permanent English settlement in North America at Jamestown, Virginia. Overall good condition. Foxing and perimeter paper wear present with age.

Plan gravé, 37.5 x 49.5 cm. Pliure centrale écrasée. Marges coupées. Cette gravure sur cuivre de la Terre sainte est la première d'une série de rééditions d'une carte de van Adrichem (1533-85). Cartographe, ce dernier était un prêtre catholique romain et un érudit biblique. Cette carte représente la Terre sainte telle qu'il la concevait se fondant sur l'étude des écritures. La carte est tirée d'une nouvelle édition de l' Atlas ou représentation du monde universel publié pour la première fois par Jodocus Hondius (1563-1612) et Gerhard Mercator (1512-94).
