            Est: €8,000 - €12,000

NATHANIEL HONE (THE ELDER) RA (1718-1784) Capt. Lambert Brabazon Oil on canvas, 75.5 x 62.5cm Signed and dated 1784 Captain Lambert Brabazon (circa 1740–1811), of Irish origin, became Lieutenant in 1758 and Captain in 1782, just two years before this signed and dated portrait by Nathaniel Hone was executed in 1784. These biographical facts help to contextualise the manner in which Brabazon is here depicted: he dons his new captain’s uniform proudly, in front of a cloud-filled, menacing sky, which alludes to both his naval accomplishments and perhaps also to his victories to come. In 1783, Brabazon was flag-captain to Sir Francis Drake (1729–1789) in the Leeward Islands and at the outbreak of the French Revolutionary Wars in 1793, he took charge of the impressment service in Dublin. Following the death of Sir Alexander Schomberg (1720–1804), he took over the command of the Dorset, the Lord-Lieutenant of Ireland’s yacht, until his own death in 1811. According to an old inscription on the reverse of this canvas, Brabazon counted Horatio Nelson (1758–1805), 1st Viscount Nelson, among his friends. Another portrait of Brabazon by Robert Hunter (circa 1715/20–1803) can be found in the National Maritime Museum, London.1 The captain appears younger there, as suggested by his darker-toned brown hair, which has become grey in our picture. The National Maritime Museum painting has been dated circa 1782, but on these grounds, was perhaps executed a few years earlier.

            Est: €4,000 - €5,000

NATHANIEL HONE THE OLD (Dublin, 1718 - London, 1784). "Portrait of an Admiral," 1775. Oil on canvas. Signed and dated in the lower right corner. Frame of the early twentieth century. Measurements: 73 x 60 cm; 86 x 74 x 6 cm (frame). We are before a praiseworthy portrait of gentleman whose link with the sea is expressly pointed out by the rough sea bottom and furrowed by a small sailboat. The haughty pose and defiant gaze, as well as the elegant blue velvet coat, suggest that he must have been a ship's captain or admiral. The portraitist Nathaniel Hone portrayed English personalities of the highest arcunia of his time. He was endowed with a privileged pulse to capture both the psychology and the chromatic qualities, as can be seen in this half-length portrait. A silk scarf knotted around his neck enhances his aristocratic bearing, while its whiteness tones down the contrast between light and shadow in a painting that advances romantic solutions. The Irish-born portraitist and miniature painter Nathaniel Hone grew up in Dublin in a Dutch family whose family tree includes several renowned artists. He enjoyed brilliant reception throughout his life. Among his models were magistrate Sir John Fielding, Methodist preacher John Wesley, General Richard Wilford and Sir Levett Hanson. Nathaniel moved to England as a young man and settled in London. In 1760, Nathaniel Hone began exhibiting at the Society of Artists, where he would exhibit regularly until the founding of the Royal Academy in 1768, when he became a founding member. Hone quickly gained a reputation as a troublemaker thanks to his work submitted for the 1770 exhibition, Two Gentlemen in Masquerade, which portrayed two of the artist's friends dressed as Capuchin monks, one of them using his crucifix to stir a punch bowl. Hone's next confrontation with the Academy would be one of the greatest art scandals of the 18th century. In 1775 he submitted to the annual exhibition "The Conjurer," a work widely read as a satirical attack on the president of the Royal Academy, Joshua Reynolds. Despite these incidents, Hone would not stop exhibiting works at the Royal Academy until his death in 1784.

Provenance: Harriette Henry (nee Armstrong) of 4 Eaton Rise, Ealing, Middlesex, in 1891, the great granddaughter of Mrs. Stewart (according to old label on reverse). These portraits are of members of that circle of landowners of Scottish origin who built up a prosperous linen business in the Lagan Valley. William Stewart (1735 Ð 1808) who built Wilmont c.1765 was a younger son of John & Jane Stewart of Ballydrain. These people built restrained and charming houses in the late 18th-century swept aside by the prosperity and poor taste of the 19th-century. Ballydrain, now the unlovely club house of the Malone Golf Club, and Wilmont in Belfast the centrepiece of the Sir Thomas and Lady Dixon Park with its renowned rose garden.

            Est: €6,000 - €8,000

NATHANIEL HONE (1718-1784) Portrait of the Rev. William Sclater (1709-1778) Oil on canvas, 76 x 64cm Provenance: By descent from the sitter in the Sclater-Booth family, later Barons Basing This, one of the most engaging of all of Nathaniel Hone’s portraits, shows Rev. William Sclater (1709-1778), the Rector of St Mary-le-Bow, London. The portrait was reproduced in mezzotint by John Raphael Smith in 1777, the year it was painted, and it was almost certainly included in that summer’s exhibition at the Royal Academy. Hone’s exhibits drew a mixed critical reaction the Morning Chronicle for Monday 28 April 1777 addressed the issue of his palette, for which the artist was occasionally faulted, commenting that ‘Mr NATHANIEL HONE is a very good portrait painter but, as has been remarked of Mr Gainsborough, would be still better if the colouring of his faces was more natural’. Despite this reservation, the critic singled out his ‘portrait of a clergyman’ almost certainly the present work as ‘a very good picture’. This refined essay in black and white, offset by the sober red of the chair and light falling on his spectacles, refutes the critic’s attack on Hone for the hotness of his colours. Hone plays with the pictorial space with subtle, but still noticeable, virtuosity. Sclater’s knuckles project to, indeed seemingly almost beyond, the picture plane, Smith’s mezzotint responds even further to this element of the portrait by introducing an illusionistic play of light on the frame as the sitter seems to emerge from the painting’s space. Hone shows a genial, rather likeable, character with a noticeable sparkle in his eye and barely restrained smile, as it the sitter and artist had enjoyed the portrait process. Rev. William Sclater was born at Loughton, Essex, and was educated at Winchester and Oxford. He succeeded his father as Rector of Loughton in 1735, a position he held until his death. In 1750 he became lecturer at Christ Church, Newgate Street, and in 1769 was appointed Chaplain to the Lord Mayor, William Beckford, at whose marriage in 1756 he had officiated. In 1771 he was given the plum job as Rector of the famous city church of St. Mary-le-Bow on Cheapside. Rev. Sclater was killed not long after sitting for Hone ‘by the fall of a bag of caraway-seeds out of the slings as it was being hoisted into a grocer’s warehouse’. William Laffan, 2022

Portrait of William Stewart of Wilmont, Belfast. Oil on canvas.

NATHANIEL HONE (1718 - 1784) Portrait of a mother and child seated in an elegant draped interior Oil on canvas, 127 x 102cm Nathaniel Hone R.A. was born in Dublin in April 1718, the third son of Rebeckah and Nathaniel Hone, a merchant. As a young man he plied his trade as an itinerant portrait painter in England picking up commissions wherever he could. In 1742 he had the good fortune to marry Mary Earle who, Strickland tells us was a lady possessed of some property. Hone lived for a time in London before heading to Italy for the purpose of study. He was in Rome in 1750 and in Florence in 1752 when he was made a member of the Florentine Academy. That same year he returned to England and settled in London again, quickly establishing a reputation as a portrait painter in oils but also in miniature. He was an original member of the Royal Academy which was founded in 1769 and continued to exhibit there until 1784, showing a total of sixty nine works. His jealousy of, and turbulent relationship with RA President, Sir Joshua Reynolds is well documented and indeed his truculence cast a long shadow over his remaining years. He died in London on August 14, 1784. Hone was as adept at painting men and women as he was at the characterisation of children and it was in this idiom that he is perhaps rightly regarded as peerless. His originality is most apparent in the well-known portraits of children where they are shown in engaging poses, cuddling pets or playing musical instruments. In the present work, typical of the fashionable English portraits of the day, a small child is held by its mother and is holding a small wooden pipe. It displays immense charm and conveys a happy relationship between mother and child and in the relaxed pose little formality is conveyed. There is an element of theatricality, which Hone enjoyed, in the positioning of the sitters against a dark curtain. The view beyond to a pastoral landscape provides light and adds further charm.

The text or libretto was written by Carlo Goldoni and was based on the novel Pamela; or, Virtue Rewarded, by English writer Samuel Richardson. The initial performance was made up of an all-male cast, but when it transferred to London in 1766 it included female singers. Anna Zamperini (c.1745 - 1771) was an Italian singer, who became extremely successful in London. The opera tells the story of the much fraught obsessions of class and social mobility in the 18th century. The Marquis of Conchiglia has fallen in love with Cecchina, who is a maid. Appalled by the social impropriety of such a match, Cavaliere Armidoro, who is the fiancé of the Marquis’ sister, decides to take the moral high road and thus refuse to marry poor Lucinda in retaliation. Cecchina is plaque by many of her own problems including the unwanted advances of Mengotto, poor man who is infatuated with her. As well as suffering the jealousy of two other maids, Sandrina and Paoluccia, who enraged by her attempt to rise above her station, try to cause as much trouble as possible for Cecchina. Following many dramatic moments and plot twists, there is a happy ending for the lead role, when a German solider, Tagliaferro reveals that Cecchina is in fact the daughter of a German Baron, and thus can marry the Marquis without causing a scandal. Anna is depicted here by Hone as Cecchina, the proper and upper-class version, transformed by her parentage, wearing a fine dress adorned with flowers, a fashionable hairstyle and bonnet and expensive jewels. Her almost porcelain complexion, highlighted with rosy cheeks suggests purity while her pose, hands crossed, smiling sweetly at the viewer creates a character of modesty and innocence, true virtues of a respected lady.

Provenance: Private collection, Germany In a gold case. Francis Griesdale made his fortune in the lace and linen trade in London. His wife was Frances Cox, whom he married in St. Andrew’s in Holborn in 1740. He decided to leave his business in London sometime circa 1750 and retire to Salisbury in Wiltshire, taking with him his London-born daughter Mary. Another son called Harry (Henry Thomas) was born in Salisbury in 1750 and lived till 1838. In The Music and Theatre of Handel’s World – The Family Papers of James Harris, we can read: "Griesdale, Frances. The wife of Peter (sic) Griesdale of Salisbury, her maiden name was Cox and she came from Quarley, Hants. In the 1760s the Griesdales lived at Walton Canonry in the Close as tenants of Dr William Dodwell; there are frequent references to them in the Harris correspondence and also in Marsh’s journal, where ‘Mr Grisdell’ is described in July 1776 as ‘an elderly get’n & great musical amateur, tho’ no performer’ and their purchase of ‘a new grand piano of Stoddart’s’ is noted February 1779. Signatures: Fran Griesdale and Fran Griesdale." Francis died in Salisbury in 1789

NATHANIEL HONE THE ELDER, RA (1718-1784)Portrait of a Girl with a Cat, c.1780Oil on canvas, 49 x 40cmProvenance: Gorry Gallery , Dublin, March 2005Nathaniel Hone the Elder was born in Dublin in 1718 to parents of Dutch descent, however very little is known of his early life. Moving to London in the 1740s, it is unclear as to where Hone received his artistic training but he was able to quickly establish himself as a notable miniaturist, working with enamels. This practice and the unforgiving diligence towards detail that it demanded shaped Hone into the oil painter that he was to become. His oils portray the sentiment that is common to miniatures, allowing his grander pieces to evoke a sympathy often lost with scale. In particular, Hone can be recognised for his endearing portrayals of children which, unlike many of his contemporaries, he depicted in a realistically juvenile manner, as opposed to showing his sitters as small adults. Experimenting with styles, Hone adopted a way of painting that was a marriage of the traditional portrait and a ‘fancy picture’. Popular in the 18th century, ‘fancy pictures’ were images of everyday life that held an element of imagination and, thus, Hone’s ‘fancy portraits’ were imbued with a whimsy that became characteristic of the artist.Painted as part of a series that Hone undertook of his grandchildren during the 1760s and 1770s, ‘Portrait of a Girl with a Cat’ is a beautiful rendition of childhood innocence. Utilising the time that Hone spent studying in both Florence and Rome, his model is painted with a softness that recalls the Italian Renaissance. The large eyes are indicative of the girl’s young age, whilst her cheeks are flushed with childish vigour. As with the other paintings in this series, the girl has been placed against a dark, plain background in order to focus our attention solely on the sitter. Her youthful skin appears luminescent against the gloom, anchoring our vision and capturing us in a mesmerising gaze.Showing his imaginative streak, Hone has painted his sitter alongside, what we can assume, is her pet cat, much like in his painting of the same series, ‘A Young Girl with a Pomeranian Dog’. Showing off his ability to depict fur, Hone often included animals in his portraits as a way in which to convey a certain story or affect a particular mood. Here, the cat works to highlight the child’s unassuming innocence. The cradling pose in which the cat is embraced is evidence of the affection between the two, the tenderness of the girl’s touch mirroring the way in which she herself might be held. With the fantasy that dances alongside youth, the girl seems to be smiling at her creation as she swaddles her pet in cloth, as if the animal itself was a fine lady. In a manner befitting that of a child, the young girl has made her cat into a co-conspirator, a friend with which she can explore the world. With his endearing portrayal, Hone successfully combines the art of the miniature, the portrait and the fancy picture to bring to life a work that is not only technically brilliant but emotionally charged. The viewer, as a stranger, feels instantly connected to his sitter, tempted by her naivety and wishing to share in her innocent delight.
