        Martha Ann Honeywell Folk Art Needlework, Done with the Mouth

        Martha Anne Honeywell (American, 1786-1856) folk art needlework vignette depicting a floral spray of white flowers rendered in silk on paper. Inscribed: "Needlework done with the Mouth by Martha A Honeywell". Front of wooden frame carved with the date MDCCCXLIV (1844) and also dated 1844 en verso along the upper stretcher. Sight: 4" H x 3" W. Framed: 5 1/2" H x 4 1/2" W. Note: Martha Ann Honeywell became a distinguished and well-known silhouette artist of the 19th century despite having been born without hands or forearms. She had only three toes on one foot, which she used, along with her mouth, to write and embroider, often during public appearances which took her across the Eastern half of the country. Her work is in the collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Smithsonian, and the Abby Aldrich Rockefeller Folk Art Museum.

Honeywell" in lower margin, retains a late 19th/early 20th century ink-inscribed note which outlines a brief biography of the artist and includes what appears to be an exhibition reference for owner "(Mrs) Edgar Garfield / Mendham, NJ". Housed under glass in a period, possibly original, molded wood frame with ebonized surface and pine backing board.

        Martha Ann Honeywell (American, 1786-1856) cut paper silhouette with gouache painted embellishments, depicting a female child in a bonnet, identified as "Mary Ann Bond Manahan [or Monahan] Born 12th of June 1840." Signed "Cut with the Mouth by M.A. Honeywell." Sight - 3 1/4" x 2 1/4". Later ebonized wooden frame, 5 1/4" x 4 1/4". Circa 1850. Note: Martha Ann Honeywell became a distinguished and well known silhouette artist of the 19th century despite having been born without hands or forearms.         SILHOUETTE - Cut Paper Profile of George Woltz, cabinet maker born 1744 in York, PA. by M.A. Honeywell (1785-1845), marked 'Cut by a Hungarian with the mouth'. The artist was born without hands and cut her paper by holding the scissors in her teeth. In gold and black molded frame, glazed, SS: 3 1/4" x 2 1/2", OS: 4 1/2" x 3 1/2", cracked at bottom.
