        Est: RM20,000 - RM35,000

The eclectic works of Chan Kok Hooi feature whimsical stories, creating images that are fascinating yet filled with remarkable detail. Ancient Egyptians had carved stories onto their walls, but in the modern times, most of our stories are transmitted through another 'wall' - screens on mobile devices. Kok Hooi's use of modern-day symbols and emojis from social media draws parallels to the semantic symbols of ancient Egyptian hieroglyphs. He demonstrates this by reproducing the emojis, tactfully incorporating the aesthetic of the hieroglyph. Within the landscape of symbols, the image of a figure cosplaying as a Sailor Soldier from the anime Sailor Moon bursts forth, internalised into a striking image. In this work, the artist emulates a particular shade of blue known as Egyptian Blue, the oldest artificial pigment used in ancient Egypt and employed lines of varying thickness to outline the images and hieroglyphs. The revered curator Syed Nabil (2010) wrote: "His works abound with a disorientating array of imagery, symbols and junctions that reveal networks of fragmented and dislocated stories intended as translations of universal concerns of the human condition." Kok Hooi won the Mayor of Beppu Prize in the Beppu Art Biennale in Oita, Japan, in 2005 and was a winner of the Malaysian award of the Asean Art Award in 2003. He also won a prize in the Taichung Print and Drawing Biennial in Taiwan in 2006. He was a finalist of the Sovereign Asian Art Prize (Hong Kong) from 2007 to 2009, and the Louis Vuitton Art Prize (Hong Kong) in 2007. He won the Juror's Award in the Young Contemporary Artists (Bakat Muda Sezaman) competition in 2006-2007 and was placed among the Top 3 (2D category) in the 2004 competition. He was awarded a Royal Overseas League scholarship for residency in Arbroath, Scotland, in 2009. His other residencies were at Galeri Petronas (2008), ABN Amro Malihom (2007 and 2008), Gwangju (2012), Red Gate Gallery, Beijing (2009), and Vermont Studio Centre in the United States in 2007. CHAN KOK HOOI (b. 1974) MASKED CARNIVORE WITH MIRROR, 2009, Acrylic on paper

        Est: RM5,000 - RM8,000

‘Four legs good, two legs bad’ is Snowball’s mantra, part of the Seven Commandments of ‘Animalism’ in George Orwell’s political allegory, Animal Farm (1945). Chan Kok Hooi’s mechanical human autobot seems to support this dictum. Has man descended back to four-legged animals with the carapace of a leatherback turtle that passes off for the marque of a car. The strange creature with a mask, mammary indicating its sex is female (or maybe a mutant hermaphrodite) has four long limbs that replace wheels for mobility, with the hands and legs strapped in tacky Bay City Rollers gloves and socks. In the background is an oval mirror with a classic frame, like in Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, where the evil witch-stepmother would ask the magic mirror, as a daily vanity salve, ‘Who is the Fairest of them all?’ All these quiet drama is played out against a closed curtain. The work Masked Carnivore With Mirror was part of 15 works shown in Kok Hooi’s New York exhibition, You Are Carnivores, at the Pierogi Gallery in 2010. They are all miniature works painted to resemble old photographs with sepia-toned nostalgia and some with burnt edges, as if being salvaged from the dump. Chan Kok Hooi’s menagerie of grotesque creatures have morphed from the more biological to the techno-funk like the Messenger Man, the Tetek (Boobs) repertoire and now the Human AutoBots.Penang-born Chan Kok Hooi has won two Minor Awards in 2004 and 2007 in Malaysia’s Young Contemporary Artists competition, and also the Juror’s Prize in the Philip Morris Asean Art Awards in 2003. A graduate of the Malaysian Institute of Art, he also won the Mayor of Beppu Prize in the Beppu Asia Biennale of Contemporary Art in Japan in 2005. His art residencies include the Freeman Fellowship at the Vermont Studio Centre (2006-2007), Arbroath, Scotland (Royal Overseas League, 2009), ABN Amro Malihom (2007 and 2008), Gwangju (2002), Red Gate Gallery, Beijing (2009). He was a finalist of the Sovereign Asian Art Prize (Hong Kong) from 2007-2009, and the Louis Vuitton Art Prize (Hong Kong) in 2007. In his Henry Butcher Art Auction debut on Nov 3, 2013, Chan sold for RM14,300 premium in one of his two lots offered. But his auction record was set at the Masterpiece Oct 30, 2016 auction when his Old Photo Series: MSN Messenger fetched RM168,000 premium.

Thanks for the mammaries, no pun intended. Chan Kok Hooi’s art obsession with this prominent part of a woman’s anatomy with blue aureoles is nothing sexual, but more a turn-off and a comment on current events, with a blue-star sapphire (or is it a blue diamond?) pendant in view. The breasts are taken as a metaphor of Mother Nature or a country being nurtured but here, the aureole studs look like rashes of pustular wounds, dripping revulsive liquid. There’s the phrase ‘milk of human kindness’ in Shakespeare, and another work in the series mentioned ‘milk of melancholy,’ but what does ‘secret milk’ portend? Kok Hooi won the Mayor of Beppu Prize in the Beppu Art Biennale in Oita, Japan, in 2005 and a winner of the Malaysian award of the Asean Art Award in 2003.
