(1926 - 2006)"As to the content of my sculpture...they reflect something of my feelings about the human condition; people relating to people, people relating to this magnificent and cruel world upon which we strive to live, and our isolation from each other."- Jon Hooper - John Hooper was born in Southampton, England in 1926, and spent time in his youth in China. Hooper was educated at the Royal College of Art and Bournemouth College of Art (now The Arts Institute at Bournemouth), and studied with sculptor Jacob Epstein. He taught at University of Natal in South Africa from 1956 to 1962, where he also established the sculpture department along with completing a number of public commissions, before moving to Saint John, New Brunswick, where he lived for the rest of his life. For thirteen years Hooper played a high profile demanding professional role, laying the foundations of two innovative educational programs within the Saint John and Hampton communities before devoting himself full-time to art in 1974.In 1991, Hooper was the first recipient of the Strathbutler Award For Fine Craft And Visual Arts. In 2000, he won the Miller Brittain Award for Excellence in Visual Arts from the New Brunswick Art Board and was made an Officer of the Order of Canada in 2007. He was also honoured posthumously with a lifetime achievement award in 2014, as an "Original" in Saint John, New Brunswick.Hooper's works can be found across the country.  He fashioned the bronze statue of Terry Fox near Parliament Hill and also in downtown Ottawa, a playful carving called Balancing sits on the grounds of the National Arts Centre overlooking the Rideau Canal.
